After my perfectly good factory belt began squeaking over the alternator pulley, I discovered that tiny pieces of gravel had made their way into the grooves of the belt. I spent an hour carefully picking them out. Fixed it right up.

Now, THAT brings to mind the grain harvest time back on the farm. One of my jobs as a child was to "dress" the drive belt that ran from the tractor to the threshing machine. Yep, the belt dressing came in a large bar of black stuff and as the belt was moving I would rub it against those sections on the belt that were squealing or slipping.

When it was running right, I would amuse myself by catching grasshoppers and putting them on the belt to see if they could jump off before the drive pulley squashed them. -

OK,OK, I was easily amused - times were different - yes, your right it IS my med time.

It was an art to get the belt back on while the tractor was running and not get a finger. They would not let me try until I was 16. A broken rake handle and a quick push. It looked so easy when done right.

Yep, if it wasn't one belt coming off it was another -

When one part would stop running, things (like the cylinder) would jam up. My father would be busy digging trash out of the parts and my grandfather would try to figure why the belt came off and adjust that pulley. I would sit on the tractor and engage the PTO when they signaled me.

Then, like you say, my grandfather would use a hammer handle to "slip" the main drive belt back on. Then, I would run and get the jug of cold well water out from under a pile of lose hay along the fence row, we would all have a big slug - then back to work.
