Looks like New Jersey has a solution to getting folks to show up for vaccinations that may actually work...

Quote:
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced a "shot and beer" program May 3. He said his office and the state health department in partnership with the Brewers Guild of New Jersey are joining forces to launch the program to encourage eligible residents ages 21 and older to get vaccinated.

Under the program, eligible residents who receive their first shot in May and take their vaccination card to participating breweries as proof will receive a free beer, the governor said during a media briefing.

If the vaccine is fully approved, it sets the stage for Pfizer and BioNTech to begin advertising the shots directly to consumers and change its pricing.
Now I feel the sting of cynicism. Just a twinge.

Oh, I think the market for sanitation and protection products is not done yet. The pandemic isn't over. At one point, there was a dream that the virus could be eradicated through the magic of herd immunity. That ship seems to have sailed. Between the repetitive global crises and domestic vaccine resistance, my money now is on a low level protracted crisis. There will probably be outbreaks in various parts of the country, localized shutdowns and mask mandates for some years to come.

They made money before the pandemic, I don't see why they wouldn't continue to do so.

You're right. We should stop buying it.

I don't see that happening. The local authorities responsible for taking those actions in the most likely locations for new outbreaks are also the ones who would avoid doing so. Unfortunately many people are more likely to bury their head in the sand and try to kick the problem to everyone else than try to be part of the solution.

Time will tell. That's the thing about natural experiments. The uncertainty makes them interesting. I think it will depend in large part on how many body bags pile up and whose bodies are in the bags. The piece that @AnalogMan posted several pages ago points out one of the major problems with this pandemic. It's not deadly enough to motivate everyone to take it seriously. Sure it kills a lot of people, but few enough that those with crainial rectitis can convince themselves that they are not in danger and say fuck all to the rest of society.

If the virus gets rolling in one those hotbeds of magical thinking it'll be interesting to see what happens.
