Yep The trip home went much better than the trip there. My bag is still sitting in Atlanta though. It will come home tomorrow according to Delta.

This type of $100-$600 turbo specials you find on amazon, eBay, or now walmart are super well known for having sketchy wastegates that don't let you control boost properly. Seen plenty of these at my friends shop that require quite a LOT of modification and work just to get them to work right, and after that they last maybe a 12-18 months in racing scenarios before something blows or gets stuck blowing the motor as well.
This type unit was used far too often by guys on the Mitsu forum that thought they could turn their base Lancer into an EVO for a couple of hundred bucks. Most ended up spending at least another $2k just to get them working at all. The majority of the kits required some sort of custom adapter to be made just to attach the to the exhaust. Since there were no tunes for them that all had to be done as custom and that added another $500 to $1K. Just getting more air into the engine means nothing if the engine can't be tuned to use it. Of the few that were willing to go far enough to get them to work at least 90% blew it up within a year. As you said many took their engines with it. I got to look at one failed one in person and the manufacturing was so bad that there was not a hope in hell that it was ever intended to last. There wasn't even any way for it to receive oil and the castings looked like they had been poured in Play-doh.
If people want to be able to say "hey look at my turbo" or "I bought a kit but just haven't put it in yet" this is a great buy but if you want any sort of actual performance and reliability skip it and buy the real thing from a reputable vendor.

Yep, that's exactly what he runs into. I feel bad for him because then his shop gets bad reviews down the line and they blame him for it. They are incredibly hard to tune, because as soon as you ask the owner to put money into at least a proper waste-gate setup for them they usually complain because that costs more anyway People are sad some times.

Also as for the custom work, it's really about the same as one would get into for a tuner kit from say garret or honeywell, definitely a custom welded manifold and such

That seems like it would be sort of easy to cobble together and fix.
Bent pipe may not be critical, but bearings are kind of important to a mechanism that relies on them to be able to spin.

Why poo poo that?

Y I remember back in the 50s, I got one of those fan whirly things and mounted it between the carburetor and intake manifold. It broke up the gasoline particles and mixed them with the air better so that the engine consumed less gasoline and increased HP.

I didn't have a dyno but it increased my top speed up to 87 MPH and reduced my 1/4 mile time down to 26 seconds.

So there!

Item listed on Ebay is kinda misrepresented.

A short block has things in it other than air. Item shown is a BARE block.
