PBM Angle kit impressions

Hi guys,

Just installed my PBM angle kit and I'm having a few concerns that I hope others who have the kit can chime on on:

My steering is now much heavier than before. From a standstill, I can turn the steering wheel about one full turn and a half until it jams up. Then I have to actually move the car forward and turn the steering wheel to see the full angle of the wheels. Otherwise it's impossible to turn the steering wheel all the way to Max angle from a stand still. Is this normal? Should I be able to turn to Max angle when not moving and the car is on?

Also, when taking a turn which I have to turn my steering wheel about 90degrees from straight position my traction control light starts flashing and what sounds like a grinding noise comes from the front of the car. Nothing is rubbing. It sounds like the car is actually trying to prevent me from turning. If I keep it at that angle the traction control light will continue to flash and eventually then the abs light will also come one and stay on. I would have to turn the car off and then on for them to disappear. Now nothing is rubbing, I checked. Everything has clearance and all no lines are pinched or being pulled.

The car was aligned right after installation. They even charged extra because it's not a normal car.

Does anyone here have any thoughts? If anyone else is running the kit have you run into the same problems?

Thanks.

Repeat your experiment with the traction control turned completely off.

I like the design of that kit, but with it you've changed the steering ratio. I'm not sure how happy the traction control will be about that. The wheel speeds at a given steering angle will not match what the T/C computer expects.

The noise is the ABS. This fires up when the traction control grabs the brakes for you.

What you are experiencing is normal I guess because I too have the PBM angle kit. No regrets to the kit though, best mod ever and makes difference night and day drifting.

Also whenever I drive, I always turn my t/c off. Now its a habit.

I've been hesitant to buy it because of this... You make the steering "quicker", so the position of the steering wheel in relation to the actual steering angle is different. That must not play well with VSC/TRAC, so i guess you lose those functionalities, which I don't want to lose for my daily.

But I don't know that for sure, just assumed by analyzing how it works. Hopefully someone can give some more insight

You're right, the noise is the abs engaging when I'm turning. If I turn off the traction control the problem goes away.

I've been advised that the traction control is activating when I turn because since I'm wider and the steering is much quicker in the front the ecu is detecting the front and rear wheels at different speeds and trying to correct by applying the rear brakes.

That is all correct.

the basic VSC / TRAC will be basically unusable beyond small steering angles.

You will have reduced steering leverage, and a heavier wheel.

All those poor drivers pre-2004 drivers.. How did they ever live without the traction and brake nannies? It's a miracle they're not all dead. /sarcasm.

In all seriousness, it's just part of the educated decision about an upgrade. Hope this is helpful.

Yes.

Try driving the car in "VSC sport" and see if the problem stays gone. That mode raises the intervention threshold for the computer, but you keep the basic stability and traction control functionality. It just lets you get a little loose before it intervenes. If that works, then you can run the kit with the nannies still working, and everybody goes home happy.

If VSC helps, IIRC there were some aftermarket thingies to set it permanently on launch.

@Spartarus thanks for the advice! ABS stillI kicks in with sport mode. Even though, I have no problems with running no traction control. I was just wondering if this is all normal. Looks like it is and I'm super happy with the kit. Steering response is insane now! So quick! By far one of my favourite upgrades!

Haha my previous (and still owned) car is a '93 Mazda MX6 with no traction control, stability control, or even airbags. But hell, now that you have those things, why not keep them?

TBH the only part that's a deal breaker for me is the ABS, and that remains functional, so i'm still debating if i should jump on it and keep on living the reckless 90's life

For now I'm gonna try the Megan inner tie rods and see if I really need the angle kit yet. I'm nowhere close to being pro yet

I gotta vouch for this kit. It's really awesome. Had my first drift session yesterday and it makes a world of difference! This should have been my first upgrade of the season instead of the supercharger!

Actually, no.
Knew that from years ago when the company was still based out of Japan.
