Could the 86 be made mid/rear engine? sure. Mosler Auto put a second northstar v8 in the rear of a Cadillac (3 actually), and kept the rear seating.

Sure. Toyota already got an I Go Crazy:



Surely 86 could go crazy as well. But what exactly is the point? To be like a Ferrari? Standard 86 is already as close to Ferrari California as the proposed mid-engine 86 would be to Ferrari Italia right?

Same reason as any rear/mid engine car. Put the mass closer to the center of the car, and reduce the polar moment of inertia.
