Wasn't there a rumor about a new MR2?
I think of the 86 as more of a Celica. I would love to see Toyota bring back the MR2 - my MKI MR2 is the one car I regret selling. Great handling, low to the ground, lightweight, affordable (and kind of slow).

My 86 is the closest thing I've found to that experience, but I miss hearing the engine behind me.

Mid engine sort of makes the front vents a useless feature.

I would be so happy to see a new MR2 with a Subaru boxer.

Unlikely. If they make one at all they will probably go all Toyota or partner with somebody else.

I predict that if they do make a new MR2 it is still several years away and if it hits the road you will not hear an engine behind you anyway. You may hear the soft thrum of electric motors though.

Yea, that's kind of what I figure too. It also won't be "reasonably priced" like the previous models were. The 1985 MR2 @ $12,000 cost about as much as the 86 in 2020 dollars when adjusted for inflation. (It is $29,035 today)

Seems unlikely they would place it lower than the 86 and there really isn't room between the 86 and the Supra. High end electric makes sense to me.

Or maybe when the "MR2" shows up the 86 goes away.

Yea, I could see that happening in 5+ years after the MK2 runs it's course.

My concern is anything they do makes the car heavier. I would take the car as is and lower the weight. After driving many different cars, I am beginning to realize that the feel I like has more to do with weight, steering and tires then any other number.

Adding power makes you faster on the straights.
Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere!
Ask anyone who has driven a Lotus at speed.

Don't you think lighter cars need bigger wings to be faster on the curves? A discussion I read in the following link

and

Take this as a grain of salt. There were discussion about new MR2. Sadly this one wasn't going to collab with Subaru. iirc they were looking at pricing fraction higher than Supra..? Maybe it was lower? Can't remember. But I remember they were trying to see if they can combine some kind of hybrid or other tech different to make it more modern sports car.

Not sure where the project is atm. I feel like it didn't work out, so they put that on hold again.
