Smile Reverse Bar Brake/Light Mod - Nsidius Industries Harness

I've been searching around for a harness to turn the reverse bar into a functional light. Browsing around the forums, I found one other harness that yes, does allow for (3) different lighting methods, but I wasn't fond of idea of having to splice wiring.

A quick Google search brought me to Nsidius Industries, claiming to have a direct plug-n-play harness that'll do exactly what I've been looking for. Frankly, never heard of the name, they've never been mentioned from what I've seen on the forums. So I dug a little deeper; I was pleasantly surprised to find they were only a couple of cities away. Sweet.

Sent a few emails back and forth...spoke to Jorge (who runs Nsidius) and met up with him to get the harness.

In short, I'll say this: the harness is top-notch. All the wiring is heat-shrinked, uses OEM connectors, requires no splicing, retains all factory wiring, and most of the instructions are easy to follow.

Here is the link to their harness: http://www.nsidiusindustries.com/pro...t-wire-harness

I opted to have a "custom" harness so that the light functions only as a rear-fog light. It's considered custom because the standard harness functions as a rear-fog light whenever your lights are turned on, but also it illuminates brighter when the brake pedal is pressed. In my opinion, three brake lights is enough already -- a fourth located below the tails is a bit overkill.

Follow my guide below as I discovered a few tricks along the way.

Reverse Bar Removal
- no need to jack up your rear end, I did this having Sportlines installed (it was a tight-squeeze though)
- there are (2) black clips that hold in the sides
- (2) bolts screwed into the top, size 10 socket
- once clips and bolts have been removed, wiggle the light backwards towards the front of the car. poke and pry up the two black clips from the rear (as seen below). pop it out

Flip Reverse Bar Over

1" Washer
- the instructions call on for a step drill bit, I dont have one so I improvised using a 1" flat washer and a Dremel

Notch
- notch a slit for the harness using a mini-filer. I had to go a bit wider in order to get the harness to fit

Twist on Harness

Wire Routing
- might be a Subaru thing because I could not find the grommet in the instructions to route the wiring through on my FR-S.
- found a different grommet located underneath the plastic around the trunk latch
- remove plastic trim, held in by (3) clips
- remove grommet

Size: 187.8 KB

Wire Routing (continued)
- feed wire up through rear bumper to grommet located underneath the negative grounding wire

Size: 210.1 KB

Cut the Grommet and Reattach

Name: 11.jpg
Views: 2165
Size: 195.8 KB

Plugs
- the harness has (2) OEM plugs. One end needs to plug into the factory wiring, and the other connects from the harness to the tail-light

Name: 12.jpg
Views: 2176
Size: 196.8 KB

Grounding
- the instructions say to connect the ground wire from the harness to the nut that holds the tail-light in.
- use a long 8 socket to remove the nut
- feed ground wire through, tighten down

Gorilla Tape
- if you're paranoid like me, go ahead and tape the grommet you cut to feed the wire through. I used a few strips of Gorilla tape -- it shouldn't come off

Testing
- flick the lights on to test functionality before you reinstall
- step on the brakes if you have a standard harness to see if the lights sync

Overall it took about an hour to do. Simple and safe install, you won't be disappointed.

Great write up christian! Yes, its a standard dual filament 3157 Bulb. It is bright and really no need to go with an LED

Only benefit of the LED is low energy demands..in case you wire it to a switch and forget to turn it off...which...a friend.....has done in the past...yes a friend...

^^Correct, no worries with this kit as its tied into the tail light circuit and will only turn on when the tail lights are triggered on.

bump! We have found a few tricks to do this install without taking out the reverse light assembly if done with a step drill. Takes us less than 30 min with a couple of tools.
