Except that this STI would not be turbocharged, and potentially may not be AWD.

Furthermore, there's no way a car Toyota wants to bring to market at 20-21,000 get marked up double. Not a chance. Considering the current WRX has 265 hp and can be had for around 25k, I can't see this car costing much more than that.

I think high performance models (STI) will get turbocharging and they always have been or else it's going to be pretty weak in performance. AWD just keeps the tradition for Subaru. Suby might just offer the 2.5L NA with AWD to differentiate from Toyota for the base version.

It would be very easy for them to make the subaru version awd. Subaru has yet to release a vehicle that does not turn all four. Also it is much easier to turn a rwd platform to awd than it is to change a ff to awd. Either way I think it is a definite possibility. The videos and released info are not enough to know thus far.

But given the design of their AWD system and engine layout, you cannot just slap on an AWD and make it happen. If Subaru indeed tries to use their symmetrical AWD system onto this car, the front overhang will be dramatically increased and the weight distribution will be greatly affected. Take a look at the Impreza then look at the FT86 Concept. You can see the amount of overhang for the Impreza. Unless they design a completely new AWD system, I don't see that happening.

Subaru has indeed been selling non-AWD system cars around the world, just not in the North America. R1 and R2 have been sold in Japan for years. Front wheel drive version Impreza has emerged into the European market recently.

I doubt the AWD will come into play after reading an article today where the chief engineer stated it will be "the best car for drifting". He goes on to talk about how they discovered 50:50 is not the way to go for drifting blah blah blah.

The point being that they [Toyota] are being way too conscious about weight, distribution of weight & resurrecting the AE86 fundamentals to factor in an AWD system. The entire purpose of involving Subaru is to use the low center of gravity in the boxer (for handling potential) and not the drive train of a current model.

The blinker lights look very similar to the one testing. I wonder if this rendering was the way the Subaru version was intended to look like.

If this is the real deal and it's slotted to have a 250bhp 2.5L EJ25 then I'll definitely be getting the Subaru variant, even though I could get the scion at employee discount I would much rather the STI version.

I don't know what to believe any more after reading Moto's info. 250 NA would be perfect. Not that I won't be happy with the 197/200hp. But 250 would like a cherry on top.

I would be thrilled with 250. 200 is nice, that can (and will) be fixed to a higher, non-NA state.
