I'd give anything for a 86 hatchback instead or a roadster 86 with a tractable hardtop like the Miata MX-5 RF.

+1

I'd rather have more junk in the trunk than be topless.

I'm the contrary, I'd rather see an 86 with a removable top or soft top rather than a hatched version of our car. I feel like it would take away from what the car actually is.

I'd only change my mind on that if the car would actually be able to perform. (Like the FF or the GT4 Lusso)

Always had a soft-spot for two-door, two-seater rear wheel drive station wagons with too much power.

So much that I converted my Miata into just such a car.

I do not like the GT86 one above, but I have to admit I do sort of like the C7 AeroWagon.

It is a 1994 Miata that was reskined with a Volvo P1800 ES body and converted to a V8 specification. Easy enough to do as there were no new wheels to invent

Step #1 Remove Miata exterior body panels

SStep#2

Drop one Volvo P1800 ES body over Miata chassis and join at seams

Step #3

Add V8 Power

how much weight do you think a hatch would add? if we take a look at all the other platforms that feature both body styles, normally there isn't too much of a penalty..and I doubt the CoG would be affected much. a mini ferrari ff would have been cool. there might something EU only that im not aware of, but i can't think of any other cheap rwd 3 door 2+2 hatch since the ae86. sad that subaru didn't go along with this considering they are big on hatches & wagons..not to mention they just missed out on the hatch craze we've had the past year or two.

I love the 1800ES, have since I was 6. I look forward to seeing your project done.

That 86 hatch at the top of the page is pretty sweet but would be so much better if the roof stayed flat rather than sloped so dramatically towards the rear. I don't think it adds enough usable space and the visibility is even worse than our cars. I love shooting brakes and would consider making my car into one when its paid off.

As I recall, your dream 2 car garage would be a 2 door Vette and a 4 door Vette (ctsv) (wagon? I can't remember). Which one would this replace?

Under certain circumstances I'd really enjoy a hatch, it would just have to be executed properly. If they strayed away from it being RWD I'd be absolutely 100% opposed. Even though a hatch stye body might not add as much weight I still would be on the side it would need a significant power gain vs the current 86. If I'd put money on it I'd say its something we'll never see on the roads. I'm quite under the impression the entire platform will be out of production in a few years anyways.
