And i needed my manual fix...in a car that was made to have a manual trans. -the scion iM i had was a stick....but it was purely an econobox. -I guess i could have gotten a ponycar....but did i want a ponycar? -I could have gone with a BMW M car....but our household was already paying for a BMW...having more BMW level car payments on top of that would have just stretched us thin unneccessarily. I'd be waiting until the BMW is fully paid off before even considering looking into something at that pricer range. Im not pulling out an 8+ year loan just to be able to reduce car payments on top of having to find a chunk of upfront change to make those payment numbers......thats way too long of a loan period. 5 years is my max (and i think is a typical loan length) And in terms of first vs second gen....I didnt want to wait for second gen (still about 6 months out at the time) And after driving puny econoboxes for so long the torque dip experience was just a nothing burger. |

I stuck with my Gen1.5 cuz I already upgraded from a 2013 FRS, and because the insane price gouging. Also because the aftermarket isn’t quite caught up. Plus if I’m going to get a new car, I’ll probably get something else.

I think about all the time how someone with modest income is able to afford these super expensive items and its partially because of these ridiculously long loans. You price a car up here in Canada that costs like 60,000 dollars and monthly payments for 5 years is over 1k a month, lease drops it down like to like 800 dollars, then you play with the down payment numbers and you find you need like 15000 to get that payment down to like 300-400 dollars a month. Stretch that loan to like 7-8 years and things look much more affordable. Obviously numbers are made up but you get the idea. |

My final choice came down the 86 or Supra. I would have paid cash for either, so money was not a factor. Value however was. The Supra would have pretty much been twice the price of the 86 and was far from twice the car and may not even be the better car. As for 1st gen vs 2nd gen, I have less than 4K miles on my 2020 GT86. Why in the hell would I even think of getting rid of it to replace it with something that has at best minor upgrades.

Either money (which also means value) isn't a consideration or it is. When I bought the FRS, I was considering cars that cost more than twice as much all of which I could afford. However, the FRS was the better bang for the buck for me. (money). If money was no concern, I would have purchased the Camaro ZL1 or the Cadillac CTS-V that was also on my shopping list, or maybe a Ferrari 458 Italia that wasn't on my reality list..... Point made, I officially give up.

Strangely enough, at this moment in time, if financing, it is probably cheaper to get a Gen 2 (assuming you can find one and pay MSRP for it) then a good, low mileage, late MY Gen 1. When you consider that used car finance rates are significantly higher than new and late MY cars are retailing for near their new prices the Gen 2 is probably the better financial deal.

To be fair, if I was buying today and let's say that the current version of the BRZ was still the 2020 version (1st gen at its best) and the 86 was the new version, I would absolutely opt for the new version.
But with money being no object (which it is not) I would not/have not give any consideration to replacing my existing 2020 with a 2nd gen. The biggest difference is the power, and if power was a major issue I would not buy any version of an 86/BRZ.
