Tracking / AUTOX in MA (Boston)?

Hi all,

There's a good chance that I'll be heading to the Boston area for a while and I'm planning to bring my FRS. I was wondering where the local trackrats go in terms of track days and other motorsports events. Quick googling shows Lime Rock and Palmer (damn $350 for a full day is steep but track looks nice).

Would appreciate any thoughts!

There is also a track in Ct called Thompson, I think. I've had a couple of friends go there, but I think it may be private so you may need to know someone (or join).

If you check out comscc.org and nasa, they run track days at various tracks in the area.

There's always the SCCA for autox, but their events have a huge turnout which may mean a lot of time standing around in a hot parking lot for not that much time dodging cones. The local Porsche and BMW clubs run their own autocrosses and may let outsiders in if you're friendly with them or if they have space available. I believe renegade miata club also runs an autox series and I'm pretty sure I've seen some twins in their results.

Yuppieracing.net runs a series of Cars and Coffee events at the Larz Anderson museum over the spring and summer. There are some very nice and unique cars that show up for those. Larz Andersen museum also runs their own series of themed events (italian car day / japanese car day / miata day / extinct car day / etc.) that are worth attending if you're in the area.

Some clubs will also organize street driving events. I would recommend you check out the club before going on one of those. It really only takes one idiot to ruin it for everyone, and most clubs organizing runs seem to have well over the required one idiot.

Are you going to be in Boston or the surrounding area?

@Justin.b thanks for that - really appreciate you taking the time to write that out I have a very strong group of 86 friends here in Toronto and we basically try to do 10+ track events together every season so part of all this is me feeling insecure that I won't be able to find a comparable group

I'm basically just doing some research now while I wait to hear back on school decisions in the Boston area. My car will be housed nearby at my family's place near Canton and will hopefully never see MA snow and salt!

I totally hear you on street events / cruises - I typically only go on those with people I know really well

At least coming from Toronto you're not going to be shocked by the short season here.

Good luck with the school stuff.

During the season, Auto-X is held on the old airstrip at Fort Devens in Ayer, Massachusetts. Check this web site for information on registration, etc: http://ncr-pca.org/index.php/club-activities/autocross

There's also drift days in New Hampshire at NHMS during the season. Its a cheap way to have some fun if you've got some tires to burn.

there is A.M.E.C. Ice Racing which is in ny and then I know the boston bmwcca does icecross in NH early in the year if the lake conditions allow for it.

To the OP, from start of April to the end of October there is autocross pretty much every weekend at Moore Air field base in Ayer MA. 8 different clubs run there. MotorsportReg is what most of them use for event registartion. For SCCA, BMWCCA, NE-SVT, and renegade miata you need an annual membership. BMW does event reg on their own website, renegade miata does snail mail reg. The other clubs are Track club usa, bay state corvette, NER porsche, and NCR porsche.

The only club that you can't easily run with is NER porsche since they restrict there event to people that at least own a porshce. Everyone else you just need to make sure to sign up before the event fills with the exception of SCCA as they don't have a reg cap.

Event prices range from $35-55 depending on the club.

NE-track days i think is one of the decent and not too pricey HPDE. Then I hear SCCA track night is going to be at thompson again next year and its about as cheap as you get up here for track time.

Probably not with their cars. Cambridge is the most car-unfriendly place I've driven. But really, you don't need a car there. There is plenty of stuff within walking distance and a decent public transport system as long as we don't get another winter like last year.

Congrats on MIT, nerd!

haha thanks - Indeed, I've been a few times and I'm hoping to never have to bring my car downtown. My parents are in the Canton area so track car will live with them

Hey I live in Stoughton which is right next door to Canton.
Been looking for a track buddy, my friends like having fast cars but don't wanna track em.

Looking forward to seeing another twin around.
