Blows my mind people are spending their time on a 2nd gen owners forum grasping for reasons to not like the 2nd gen. I mean if you want a dated interior and less power so you can feel like a hipster just go drive an ae86.
A Buick? Tesla? Jesus christ its a facelift and upgraded engine. Its 98% the same exact car. |

Totally agree. And I don't see how the car is "softer." 60% stiffer front end. 70% stiffer subframe. 50% more torsional rigidity. They made it a much more hard core sports car with better interior materials. It's still not a luxury car. Weight didn't really go up. And now you can actually use 3rd gear to hold a slide. Everything i see is showing me a better sports car. Not car. Even prefer the lighter steering with more consistent feel from lock to lock. Anyways, that's what I've found. I don't like the FA20. I think it truly is a dud. The FA24? It's a whole lot better. |

Both gens are cool, but at 45 and with several other cars in the garage, the 1st gen never appealed to me. The Gen 2 just seemed more finished, mature, and capable off the showroom floor. So, I got one and love it so far. It's engine, stiffer chassis, and other tweaks make for a great foundation for fun street driving and capable track driving.

I meant metaphorically. It's a much more capable machine that feels better at low speeds and definitely feels better in spirited driving and on opposite lock. If I never drive a gen 1 again? I'll be more than OK. They killed it with the 2nd gen is my opinion. And I've owned both.

That works both ways.
The guys that believe the 22 is all of a sudden a Porsche killer suffer the same delusion.

I think Gen 1 (13-16) is NOTICEBLY "rawer" than any other MY. Gen 1.5 (17+) are noticeably softer and more refined already. I am sure Gen2 just takes this up another notch but that is not to say it can't be made stiffer. Just a set of coilovers and you are pretty much 90% there. We have to keep in mind that both gens shares 95% of the same chassis so any different felt is largely in the suspension tuning. Slap a set of 22+ suspension on a Gen1 car and you have a soft ride and if you do the reverse, the 22 car will now be "crashy".
But i get it, there are "sensory" experiences that cannot be measured with numbers. It really comes down to your preference. It's the same argument on the S2k boards, AP1 vs AP2.

It is a fucking comparison thread even if on the master race second gen sub. Some people like the first gen better and say so. They must all be morons though since that 2% difference (your own value) makes the 22 a supercar all of a sudden. Going to start a petition to have all the first gen cars crushed since they are such a total waste of time to own and nobody can possibly like them better.

Don't think anybody is bothered that you like it better. The insistence that EVERYBODY else should also like it better is the sticking point.

I didn't have any bracing on my '13. I'm sure it makes a difference. The stiffening of the chassis was one of the first things I noticed. Reminded me of my RX8s which have very high torsional rigidity. Especially across the front end and rear lateral stiffness.

Objectively, the second gen is superior in almost any way to the first gen (the weight gain is somewhat more than advertised, since they removed the spare tire), I'm not arguing with that. I also never said it's not the better sports car. What I am trying to share is my personal subjective experience. Could it be that my mods are the reason for that? Or perhaps my nostalgia to my first drive in my BRZ colored my impressions? All might be true. I still feel that this is a useful experience to share with other people. |
