Yup. Old unit still works. So I’ll delve into TIS and see if I can find the diagnostic menus and go from there I guess. Worst comes to worse I’ll just have to live with a mirror backup camera. Lol the CarPlay is too nice to give up

The only oddball thing could be that the camera requires 6v?
But an OEM unit should handle that internally.

yea sadly im at a loss. hooked the 19 unit back up and it functions just fine. the 2020? nothing. screen doesnt do jack.. diagnostic screen is what i need to figure out to see if its a signal thing or i need to find a OEM camera to try. hopefully my region rep or someone can point me in the correct direction as to getting into diag menus on this sucker. the backup camera isnt a massive necessity. but it really made backing up to trailers super easy |

it might depend on the unit you have. my '18 tacoma had the 'entune' oem radio, and didn't have a reverse wire behind the radio in any of the harnesses(i spent a lot of time volt-checking every single pin trying to avoid having to run the wire i had to run). i assume it worked off canbus.
it's possible that some sort of quirk in that '20 unit is expecting a similar digital signal, which your '05 is obviously not going to send it. and in that case, would bone your idea of using it with the reverse camera.. toyota isn't known for changing pinouts on similar wire harnesses so much-- they still use the same speaker connector from 1986... so i expect that chasing wiring diagrams is going to continue being a dead end no matter who or what you ask about it.

This radio off what I can tell from the diagrams has no can Communication and the backup camera in the 86s is also an RCA type camera. It’s just done in a harness vs a rca cable we’re use to. I have a feeling there’s something else going on but without a diag menu I can’t see what inputs are being read. I did confirm the speed signal is working because automatic sound level adjustment works. I’ll just have to keep toying with it till I figure it out.
Or find an 86 I can use to test the radio to rule it out The entune units like your truck use communication lines. I found out the 19 model radio has some communication lines in it too but unused in stock applications. Just to clarify I added all the wires required to make the last unit function. Speed, reverse, parking brake were not in the stock harness. Being an 05 it was the first model year the tundra used the “modern” Toyota systems in terms of engine control signals. While not having can communication yet Playing with it while writing this and screen off then going to reverse causes the screen to come on. Somethings happening. Guess I need to find a oem camera to test. I have one somewhere. Just need to find it Last edited by Empty_lord; 10-31-2021 at 10:07 PM. |

i would then break out the video connection with an rca jack so that i could run a test signal into it-- any vcr/dvd player input would work at that point. that would prove the reverse signal is working on the radio and display.
that would really just leave camera power. the camera is powered off the radio, so there's either a problem with that power adapter within the radio, or it's pinout.

work the rest of the week but the plan now is to probe and see if the camera is getting powered from the head unit. if not feed it power from elsewhere. this unit appears to use automotive grade linux like the entune 3.0 units in other models. so fingers crossed i can figure out diag. i still think getting in there will help narrow things down. a test vehicle would be ideal. but only person i know with an 86 is a 2018 with the camera in the mirror. I may just hook up to a newer tacoma at work and see if it functions when i get my next used one in the bay. easy to remove radio and should have all the connections (well pre entune 3.0 that is) the 3.0 units went to completely different connectors. |

Confirmed operation if the camera in a different vehicle (17 taco) it works. So it’s the aftermarket camera I’m using. Guess I’ll be working on wiring up a factory backup camera now lol

IF anyone happens to have their radio out, a clear photo of the 28 pin connector would be greatly appreciated. only difference i can find harness wise is the tacoma had ignition power on pin 1 of the 28 pin, my truck does not nor does the EWD show it on the 86. but that doesnt mean the wires not there.

Man, a phone upgrade makes a world of difference with this thing. I went from a 2016 Sony Xperia X (F5121) to the new Xperia 5 mk.III and the speed difference on android auto is astounding.

Hi guys, still enjoying my 2020 radio in my 2017 86. I've changed my phone (Pixel 4 to Pixel 6) and weirdly now my phone ask me for permission to access my data (like contact etc) randomly. Each time I say yes, but from time to time it pops back.
Nothing crazy, but just want to know if someone else experience that.
