This is for Cali only. Sucks to live in that state. Come live in Oklahoma, no emissions and no smog test. It's the best.

Out of the top 10 worst cities for air quality California has 6 cities on the list. I'd be willing to bet that one year's worth of fire smoke in California is a lot more harmful than some cars that don't meet strict emissions testing. California smog laws are a joke and a money grab by a state that is desperate to squeeze every penny from its citizens.

It's so easy to argue the point you want to make when you isolate the argument to a case that seems to support your opinion!

Though I don't know that this new law helps emissions specifically, I'd guess you are right within the narrow slicr of time you're considering, on the air pollution front.

On squeezing money I couldn't say. It's pretty easy to avoid being in a place you'd get fined unless your exhaust rusted through moments before you were caught... So that's not an argument I see having much weight.

This has nothing to do with emissions. All catbacks are smog/CARB complaint. CVC just requires it to not be out of DB range. Noise for the sake of obnoxious noise is the reason this law exists. Blame the fart can exhausts and the burnouts and dounuts in the middle of the night. We live in a densely populated state, so this is about eliminating noise pollution—not air pollution.

Before this law people would swap back on the stock exhaust in fifteen minutes or put a baffle in the tip in two minutes then swap everything back after getting their ticket signed off. This is a deterrent for those folks and to those folks with valves in their exhausts who are running their GT Mustangs in track mod on the streets, but who instantly can flip a button for their stock exhaust to go into quiet mode—instant fix-it-ticket.

On the issue of air pollution in cities, that is why we have strict laws. We have a higher and denser population in a warm state that is mostly a giant valley. We have the ocean breeze to trap the smog in the valley between it and the mountains. If we didn’t have CARB our air would suck more. Have you been in countries this dense that don’t have emission laws or are old enough to remember a time before catalytic converters? Living in that environment, driving behind a truck, and you may pass out from the fumes.

Interestingly, Utah at least is having massive air pollution issues. They're not a CARB state.

Track-only cars should have to follow the same pollution laws as all cars. The point is clean air. I get nauseous with all the fumes at tracks.

As for exhaust sound, it's annoying too. I do like the photo of the add-ons for Laguna Seca. Loud exhausts only make sense for motorcycles, and motorcycles don't make sense at all.

Same thing happening in Toronto. Thanks to the idiots downtown on Harleys absolutely deafening everyone with their ridiculous ancient bikes and the random "enthusiasts" flooring it in a 40-50 (km/h) zone for no reason at all, the mayor said they'll seriously look into noise regulation. The whole noisy exhaust issue has been quiet the past few years, I haven't really heard of anyone being pulled over, even full catless cars. But as always, it's a case of a few idiots ruining it for the rest of us.

In order of safety:
driving a car defensively and soberly
driving a car at race speeds on track
driving a car drunk at race speeds on public roads
flying in a single-engine airplane with up-to-date maintenance
riding a motorcycle defensively and soberly

OK, I may exaggerate some, but you get my point. There's nothing medics at race tracks hate more than motorcycle days. Helmets are OK for the fall, but not so OK after the guy behind you runs over your head.

But yes, they're awesome fun.

I never said the exhaust law had anything to do with emissions, I was responding to the guy who implied that just because CARB wasn't enforced that the air quality would be poor.

We are talking about a $1000 fine for a little bit of NOISE. No harm is being done to anyone. I doubt anyone ever went deaf from a Mustang GT with an aftermarket exhaust. Menawhile, people shit all over the streets of SF for free and no one bats an eye.

I understand the logistics of things like catalytic converters and maintaining air quality in highly populated areas, but CARB as a whole is a joke and a massive money grab. It's possible to have clean air without so many unnecessary laws and guidelines. But then again, California loves that kind of stuff.

People really need to read the law and not just base judgment on what other people post.

https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/f...01720180AB1824

Quote:
(4) Existing law provides that whenever any person is arrested for certain offenses, including, among other things, an infraction involving vehicle equipment, the arresting officer is required to permit the arrested person to execute a notice, prepared by the officer in triplicate, containing a promise to correct the violation and to deliver proof of correction to the issuing agency, unless the arresting officer finds that a disqualifying condition exists.
Existing law requires every motor vehicle subject to registration to be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise and prohibits a muffler or exhaust system from being equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device. Existing law further prohibits the modification of an exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner that will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle exceeds existing noise limits.
This bill would include, among those conditions that are disqualifying, a violation of the above-described requirements related to mufflers and exhaust systems.
It simply just means the officer(s) have more discretion at enforcing this. The law states that you cannot have an exhaust system more than 95db, and as long as you understand your rights to own a car with an exhaust system in compliance with VC 27151. Nothing about the passed legislation changes VC 27151. If you read the details about "disqualifying conditions", it's really more of the same stuff that is already enforced.

27151: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/f...ctionNum=27151

Too many enthusiasts think they can do whatever they want but don't take the time to understand their rights. At least CA doesn't have those useless vehicle inspections that are even more of a joke.

^^ Exactly. As long as the vehicle in question abides by the laws already set in place, there really is nothing to worry about.

This discussion is pointless if no one reads the law. Unless the law has been written to be explicitly vague, most laws and the legal language they include are designed to be as clear as possible (legal jargon aside). It's not complicated legal stuff, its English.

...unless its Latin...or French.
