Just Bought A 2016 WRX To Compliment My 2014 FRS. Just Wanted To Think Out loud.

This is mostly just to touch on the differences between the cars and how owning both of them just really changed my perspective. Although they do not compete with each other directly I do know of people and members who cross shop these cars.

Okay, so I purchased my 2014 Scion FRS in the summer of last year after both of my Civics got stolen within 6 months of each other. I bought it with the intention of it being my car to daily drive and for a whole year that is what it did. It got great gas mileage and I had tons of fun moments (And scary moments during the winter season.) But within the last few months the Scion FRS had started getting to me. I slowly without really realizing it started to hate getting in the FRS and using it as a daily driver. The stiffer suspension made the roads that I drove on daily a chore and I frankly started hating my car. Don't get me wrong, my wife and I would take nice long trips around the 494/694 ring around the twin cities every week because I loved driving it. But using the FRS as an appliance was slowly taking its toll on me. Falling into the car and climbing out of it on a daily basis became a chore and locking my jaw as I saw expansion joints on the highway approach the front of the vehicle made me really hate driving it.

So recently I wanted to get a second vehicle with AWD to make driving in the winter months less scary. I rarely got stuck but climbing gentle hills with ice and snow in the mornings before the work crews got out there to clean it off put a lot of mental stress on me. The act of just trying to keep the rear end in line so I can slowly inch my way up these hills was mentally draining. We initially shopped some AWD Lexus models and a Legacy GT. But shopping in the used car market is difficult sometimes because you can't always get what you want/need unless someone is actively trying to sell theirs. When we went to a Subaru place to look at an Impreza a blue WRX caught her eye and she inquired about it. I explained to her what it was and said that it probably meets everything that we need. So I did my research and came to the conclusion that it'd be perfect for us and it'd be fun for me. (hehe)

I purchased it from a Subaru dealership way outta town because I definitely wanted to get the WRBlue. (Just because in my heart a WRX will always be blue and all the fuckers in town keep buying them up.) I absolutely love the Turbo performance and its more supple ride on highways and byways make it a much easier fun commuter car. The shifter feels like absolute horse shit but I can acclimate pretty fast.

So I've put on a little over a hundred miles on the car for the past few days and I didn't think that I would have wanted to get back in the FRS anytime soon. I decided I wanted to get the FRS detailed at a local shop so I drove it up to the shop about 8-10 miles away. They were overbooked so I set an appointment for the following week.

On the way home I was really overwhelmed by how much I had missed my FRS in the past few days. I found myself taking a detour and driving on some twisties before I came home and I came to a startling conclusion. Both of these cars perfectly compliment each other. What one cannot do the other can. (Except for towing boats and trailers of course.) I found that I had really missed the more sporty handling of the FRS and the low center of gravity. I craved the FRS's planted cornering ability and the immediacy of its naturally aspirated engine. I WAS BACK IN LOVE WITH MY FRS!! And as I was driving my FRS I thought about my new WRX and its fantastic torque in low RPMs and boost sinking you into your seat. It's amazing really that both of these cars have the same FA20 motor in them when the difference in their characteristics are almost night and day.

In conclusion I feel I have made a great decision to get the WRX with my FRS. They compliment each other so well. If I could use the 'Girlfriend' analogy here then I'd say the FRS was like your first true love that stole your heart. She's super spontaneous and loves to have fun. After a while with each other you started noticing each other's faults and became distant. Your priorities were no longer lining up. But then you meet someone new and they fulfill that part of you that wants to grow up and still have fun but in different ways. They introduce you to new things and different ways of doing things. Things are great but when you talk to your old girl friend you realize how easy it is to still talk to them and how attracted you still are to her.

I didn't realize how owning a new car could make you grow more appreciation for your older car. It's truly amazing what car guys go through to have fun driving.

TL;DR - Cheated on FRS with WRX. Now in a polygamist relationship.

Congrats on the purchase! I traded my FRS in for a '16 STI about a week ago and couldn't be happier.

I'll miss the FRS, but the STI was jsut the better car for me.

Kinda gets me thinking about the fact that I shouldn't be spending money on the FRS. Either this year or next, I'll probably be in a mustang or genesis. Or if I decide to put my big boy pants on, a Cayman if I can afford it.

I'm in the same situation, I like the FR-S April through October. The rest is just a daily anxiety attack of getting home in one piece. Snow banks were really starting to kill me. Might just get a cheap beater 240 or bmw though.

FRS is my third love. I feel you on other cars. Sometimes i prefer driving my 90 pickup over my twin. Idk why.

I'll likely be in the same position as you lol. I ordered a 2016 DGM WRX and it's supposed to come in the last week of August unfortunately.


More than likely I'll keep the FR-S as well, I just needed something more practical and slightly more professional looking. I'm going through the hiring process with the ATF and needed something other than the FR-S.
