Vortech Owner Thread & Setup Questions
Since there are many of us now running the vortech kit, I figured i'd make a single thread linking to others personal vortech threads. It would be nice to post videos, whp, and also be able to ask questions in relation to the kit and be able to discuss it with others who are also running the kit. Such as general questions like has anybody upgraded their clutch? What gauge setup are you running? etc.
All builds listed are using the new upgraded compressor. haha I had no idea Huehuecoyotl got banned.
Anyway, this is probably a super lame first post, but after hardcore lurking for the past few months, and reading every single thread I could find, I have a few questions about the Vortech kit + other components of the car. 1. I like the feel of the stock suspension, but want something that lowers it about 1" or so. With the Vortech, I've read that it's a good idea to replace both the shocks and springs (so coilovers I guess). What suspensions are you guys using? 2. Planning to get the AP racing Sprint Big Brake kit from Essex - does the 20lb weight savings help offset the weight of the Vortech? Trying to keep the weight distribution close to the original. Also, Sprint or Endurance? Both seem fine since I won't be tracking it much at all. 3. Does the Vortech work well with the AT? Or, is everyone that has it currently running MT cars? 4. Is an oil cooler needed, based on what you guys have seen SO FAR? Obviously, that can still change with summer coming up, but what has been your experiences? 5. With the Vortech installed, is the Perrin intake (or any intake, for that matter) overkill? If not, which would be good to use with the kit? 6. (probably most importantly) How long of a break-in period is needed before adding the vortech is "safe" for a new engine? I have already decided to buy the kit, I just would like to get it installed ASAP, but want to make sure the engine is broken in properly first... Thanks so much for even taking the time to read this. I'm excited to be part of this community and really excited to see what else gets expanded upon/developed with this awesome platform. |

This shall be my 1st post too and may very well be just as lame, been lurking on these forums since 2009 lol. Probably not qualified to fully answer your questions but i have nothing better to do at this hour...
1. I'm no expert but I've been drooling over Racecomp's Tarmac IIs. 2. Sprint would seem sufficient if you're not going to track much. 3. No idea since I bought a MT, but hey if Vortech says it supports AT, I wouldn't doubt it. As for Q4/5/6, I'd like to hear the answers to these as well, especially regarding the intake. Edit: Does anyone have a picture of what the inside of the Vortech intake box looks like? From the looks of it, an intake designed to replace stock wouldn't fit at all with the blower being right in front of it. |

You might also want to designate which compressor, pulley, and fuel, if you're going to quote power levels.

You can't use any of the other aftermarket intakes with the Vortech - it won't fit, but the Vortech kit already comes with a K&N and box that mates up to the OEM snorkel.

1. As far as suspension goes, im currently running megan street series coilovers. They're obviously not great coilovers but for the price they function pretty well. I am planning to upgrade coilovers as well as the rest of the suspension in the near future but for now the ride is fine. 2. If you wont be tracking it much then those brakes should be just fine. Not exactly sure what the complete weight of the vortech kit is, but the weight savings on the brakes will definitely offset some of the kit so you shouldnt be gaining that much more weight. 3. I also have a MT so I can't really comment on how it works with the AT, but as the last person answered vortech did state that it works with the AT so it shouldn't be a problem. 4. As far as an oil cooler goes, I dont really see a great need for one right now, but im gonna keep an eye on the temps as it starts to get hotter. I live in texas so it tends to get pretty hot in the summer time so I guess time will tell on that, but for right now the car runs fine without one but thats also in my future plans to get one. 5. The aftermarket intakes out won't work with the kit, but there is one included. I'll try and get an actual picture of the filter and everything of the intake installed on the kit. 6. For break in as long as you've broken in the engine with the first 1000 miles, it should be fine to add the kit, but of course this all starts falling in the lines of personal preference. As soon as I got past the break I didn't hesitate to start modding the car and start drifiting it as well and i've had no problems with the car yet. Currently im at 10,500 miles. |

Yeah I'm really interested to know the 3.125 inch actuall boost number I get. Frank at vortech said to me in an email that it will be in the the neighborhood of 12-13 psi. I understand why skatery had to use a 2.88 to hit the 12.5 psi but that is at 5000ft. And I will be basically sea level so I wonder how different my graph will be to his. Also I have a boost gauge and cosidering buying the in line octane reader to make sure my e85.@ my pump is potent enough

3. The system will bolt right up without issue, but we have not released our tuning with our complete system for the automatic transmission yet. For systems purchased through Perrin or Visconti, they can provide you with tuning for an automatic transmission FR-S/BRZ without issue. On a side note, there are tons of manual transmission enthusiast-owned cars in SoCal, but we have not been able to source enough automatic owners in SoCal willing to lend us their cars for 4-6 weeks to confirm universal calibration for the autos. If anyone that has a 100% completely stock automatic FR-S/BRZ on here might be interested, they can pm me for further details. 4. An oil cooler should not be needed unless competition level track racing is your intended use, and even then the oil cooler is more of a given for any vehicle, regardless of modifications or boost. 5. The design of the Vortech air box included with the system is designed to function as a more OEM version of a CAI, and therefore would not allow the use of another CAI in conjuction with it. 6. We have had new car dealers that sell and install our various systems for years, right off the lot on brand new vehicles. For that reason, unless someone has a compelling argument on how an FA20 engine is unique in that fashion, I would say that no significant break in period should be required prior to Vortech System installation. |
