However, if it is the case that the exception cannot be used (or not desired to be used) for the "Mustang" any longer, then just throw in something that will get 150 eMPG into the same model and bam -- you have satisfied the `rules`.

I think there is more to the naming than just word-of-mouth hype.

I think it is word-of-mouth and to ease people into the association of the Mustang and to conjure the notion that EVs are performance oriented and not just a hippie green vehicle.

I highly doubt that there is some model specific mandate based on naming schemes. Averages for fuel economy and emissions are measured against an entire fleet. CARB or EPA isn’t so focused on specifics like you are suggesting, or the government wouldn’t allow corporations to sell emission credits to other corporations.

I was in my Fiancée's N/A Impreza the other day and this dude in Tesla comes back from a slight dig up to 60 mph (or so) just enough to get a car length ahead of me and then hit the brakes (in the other lane not mine) just to show me his car could out accelerate mine and then go back to crawling at not even the speed limit to make it the rest of the way home... I was like yes, I get it, you guys are ALMOST there.

Yeah, if as much resources and infrastructure money had gone into hydrogen fuel cell vehicles as Tesla et al have put into chemical battery vehicles, I'd probably have one in my garage right now.

Toyota n others put big $$$ into the tech. Toyota has all the money to make it successful if it was going to be adopted. The big problem is making fuel stations, which is much harder than installing chargers. Hydrogen is ok in general but the efficiency makes it silly compared to just charging batteries. The real benefit is range, but that problem of electric cars will likely be resolved before hydrogen would ever take off.
