What? I'm not being argumentative, this is a discussion. No insult intended. I dont know what happened in your accident, and it had to suck for sure. Saying that it was because you got a 600cc bike and that's why you had it is placing blame on the machine. As a (now) skilled rider you have to see how forgiving they are. They have a very peaky powerband for the most part but getting going and learning you could basically ignore half the rpm available and only start tipping in to the power when you're ready.

Honestly....this is my experience... I acted like more of an idiot on smaller bikes than I ever did on something with decent displacement because I knew it wouldn't bite back hard. Those little 250 rebels at the safety courses.... come on. I think learning throttle control, braking, and everything was easier with something that had better response overall.

I agree with this. Most of the motorbike accidents in my country is made by the young people on their first bikes. At least it was the case a few years ago.

This is my -inexperienced guy- opinion, so OP just ignore it --> Choosing a fast bike as the first one, is like buying a Koenigsegg RS1 as your first car. Buy a second hand that you would not feel sorry for small mistakes that you will make, and live longer.

The XS400 wasn't my first bike, it was my first new bike.
Second credit purchase after a CRT colour TV with a remote was first. To build up credit history.
I was entirely satisfied with the 400. Think I would still be, but it got crashed by the second owner.
The TV lasted 30 years until it contracted an internal red stripe across the middle of the screen

I find slow bikes can be just as fun as fast bikes... doesn't matter as long as they have two wheels and character. How you ride makes more of a difference anyway... I was on track at willow springs last spring with a bunch of us commoners on liter bikes and Joe Roberts (moto2 racer) showed up and was lapping everyone all day on a 300. We cleared the track when he broke out the HP4 though

I wouldn't class them as safe, they are to low, in city traffic it would be lost.

The KTM RC390 is the most well-equipped small displacement sport (not supersport or sport tourer) bike on the market today. KTM went right up against the line on engine sizing (based on A2 restrictions) and went further to include much better stock suspension, brakes, and other bits and pieces than the similarly priced competition. There is a reason it's a highly raced bike in lower level motorsport.

Also as others have said, it's the most track oriented of the small displacements (R3, CBR300, Ninja 400) in terms of rider position. Single cylinder bikes are also easier to flick around corners and have a more dynamic power band than parallel twins.

That said, be honest with yourself about how you want to ride. If you're like me, you like the idea of being on a race track every day but are otherwise unable to get to one except on rare occasion. Rather, I spend lots of time cruising "aggressively" if you will; kind of like how I drive the BRZ. The problem is, unlike the BRZ, a small displacement single (and sport twin usually) will have your body vibrating into small pieces at highway speeds. So I have learned that larger displacement inline 4 cylinders typically satisfy my need to feel like Fernando Alonso or Valentino Rossi without actually being uncomfortable. Hence why I sold my single cylinder 250 cc bike years ago for a CBR650F. It has a more normal seating position and only sits at 6500 RPM at highway speeds (as opposed to 10500). And the inline 4 can rev like a monster, developing power in a supersport manner (major boost at top third), kind of like how the BRZ or an S2000 can do, all without the insane insurance cost of a supersport.

A Kawasaki 175 Bushwhacker. Don't remember the model year.
It arrived in several chunks and boxes. Got it running. Had a 4 speed transmission and Hi and Low range selector.
Next was a used 70 Yamaha DT360. Kick start only that could put your shoe into orbit if you missed.

I will always recommend the Suzuki SV650 for a first bike. They are relatively light and nimble, but also have enough power that you wont get bored with it in a year. I think the "S" model looks better, but I like the naked model too. They're also reliable as all hell and can be found for pretty cheap!
