2020 BRZ head unit into the FR-S (2013)

I recently acquired a cheap head unit from a 2020 (P/N 86271CA690) part out. it was listed as unknown functionality. so I took the gamble hoping to get android auto in my 2013, it was cheap BTW.

After plugging in the head unit, to my surprise it powered up after plugging it in and cycling the key. but I had a few issues that maybe more knowledgeable people can help with.

1st when I turned the key off the radio stays on.

2nd USB connection for android auto doesn't work, also usb drive with music won't work.

3rd the built in map/gps system shows me being in California, i reside in NY.
(I think i figured out I don't have the add in GPS antenna for this)

4th I have an aftermarket back up camera which doesn't work.
(I was left with 1 extra connector which i believe contains the camera connection.)

I did figure out the turning off isn't an issue. It will go off on its own after a few minutes(2-5 minutes approx.) I ordered a 28 pin adapter which should allow me to plug in my back up camera. I also have a GPS antenna on the way to see if I can get nav working. I just got in a usb port plus wires to check android auto connection.

Gps antenna is in I now have working built in navigation. Usb cables were i have dual ports plus iadded plus power to the aux unit under the radio. And I now have working android auto. I still need to get my backup camera working.

But definitely made progress after reviewing wiring schematics for a 2018 BRZ and looking for missing connections vs my 2013 FRS

I have recently supplied my documents (excel sheet) to someone on a face book group. He recently completed the same swap (2015 BRZ) and has almost everything up and running. If you need it I would be happy to share it.

Hi mgrabo, would I be able to grab that excel spreadsheet off you? I am about to put a 2020 86 head unit into a 2013 86.

I am hoping the only issue I have is the amp bypass, but it will be handy to have your notes if I run into any other issues. TIA!

Myself and I see others would benefit from sharing the information here.

Can you share your excel sheet? I’m in the process of taking on this project myself. Thanks!

Genuinely curious, with the large number of reasonably priced double DIN aftermarket HU's available these days, what's the advantage to upgrading to a later model OEM unit? Seems like even the latest infotainment units were considered by reviewers as less than desirable?
