We did when we bought the house. But t was a pretty basic test if it was potable. Then acidity and yield tests, along with other parameters are way more money than we were willing to spend at the time.

I feel like it’s mostly a preference thing.

A traditional softener will give your water a slimy/slippery feel. Some people like it some don’t.

A citric acid chelation conditioner has the advantage of dissolving existing mineral deposits over time (if you have any).

Sodium softener will be cheapest to run; it’s hard to say whether a potassium softener or citric conditioner will cost more to run. If you use a lot of water you can exhaust the conditioner often enough the refills add up to be the most expensive, if not, a potassium softener might cost the most if recharging on a basic set schedule and not according to water usage.

Recharge brine discharged from sodium softeners is worse for the environment than potassium brine.

I am on well water. Our water is delicious, but VERY hard. I can cut the ppm for drinking just with the filter in the fridge. I've been investigating water softeners, and there is something else to consider if you have a septic system. I've been told the traditional softener that purges and re-brines itself is not good. All the nasty salty purge water will kill your septic.

I'm still investigating myself.

Same here, it is fine to cook with, but we use the filter in the fridge for drinking water.

I did some digging, that will require more digging, on a softener that won't compromise our septic. Right now I'm seeing Tier1 as one of the ones mentioned.

No. I make that judgement call every time. My days of spoon-feeding lazy people are long gone.

Back in Missouri, I had a traditional softener that purged into a septic tank for at least the 7 years that I lived there. The septic worked fine.
