Agreed.

I paid Kickstarter, got to play a little demo, thought the artwork was phenomenal and that's where we're at.

One of the things that wows me is the number of transistors on a gpu chip now days. Nvidia TU104 has something like 13 billion!! I was going to make a copy using relays but decided against it because I couldn't find overclocking software that would be applicable.

Holy mang!!
There is no mention of ray tracing in this clip. Does that mean ray tracing is superfluous?

I literally just finished watching this before I saw you post.

The landscape and hard object in this are amazing. Yet with all that, people still don't look right. I guess that's the holy grail of runtime production.

The CPU is pretty much become secondary to the GPU now, since most of the processing goes into the GPU. I could see that at some point the CPU becomes an adapter card plugged into the GPU motherboard of a gaming computer.

Yeah, but, how about the uncanny valley.
The amazing visuals in the Unreal5 clip are....mmmm... amazing and I guess that's what some segments of the gaming world want (myself included) but I remember playing low polygon games and enjoying them as a game, not a visual simulation of some sort.

That's the part that will need another leap forward in tech I think, so you can't tell the difference. Until then, it will always look cartoonish. Even the best effects on movies are detectible if more than a second or so long.

Yea, I'm more about the story than the visuals. I still play 1920x1080 (and sometimes 1920x1080x3) because I don't really see any advantage to forcing the game higher than that. I think it does matter in VR, but not on traditional gaming.

Other than VR, the other exception may be flight sim, where the additional detail adds value.

The only game I play is Witcher 3. Recently, I bought a 43 inch 4K monitor and installed the HD Reworked texture pack. Game looks significantly better. I guess it depend on the game, not every game can look better with better than 1080P resolution. And I think a large monitor is necessary to see benefits of higher resolution than 1080P.
