How many coats of pearl?

Hey,

I bought a knock off TRD lip kit, minus the rear lip, and was planning on painting the kit myself with spray cans. I've never painted pearl (K1X, Halo White) so I not sure how many coats of base/pearl to apply.

I've already bought 2x cans of base, 2x cans of pearl, 1x can of primer, and x2 clear. Question is, for anyone that has painted CWP/K1X, how many coats of primer, base, and pearl did you use to get a close of a match?

Thanks in advance.

You may be the first to actually do this! Experiment on something else before committing to the bumper. Not sure there is an exact formula for how much of each layer when it comes to spray cans.

i had my body kit painted last week. I had a quick glance at the colour mix, pretty sure there's a bit of red in there too. Gonna be really hard to mix without a paint software to tell you how much of each colour you need to blend.

I guess I'll make this sorta into a DIY. Talked to the paint shop where I purchased the paint right now and he recommends painting any piece of plastic into 3 sections; one with 2 coats of pearl, other with three, and last with 4. All with 3 coats of base of course.

Ill let you guys know when I actually try it next week.

No flex agent means it will just crack when you hit something or when it flexes.

How much did you spend on all the cans? Paying someone to paint it professionally would have cost about the same.

I can tell you that on my previous car a B6 A4 I painted the ultrasport front valance with rattle cans mixed from a local paint shop. I didn't need to use pearl for the color but I was seriously impressed with the finish I achieved. The paint never cracked and looked damn near the same as the OEM paint. Unless you are going for a show car / trailer baby I say it's possible to get a awesome paint job with rattle cans.

$180 for everything mentioned above.

I have painted with rattle cans from the same paint shop on my past cars and they came out decent. Could have been better but I was not as competent. I've never painted pearl so its different.

I used this site to order 37j in spray cans to paint my TRD front splitter. It came out really really nice. Just make sure you pick up some clear coat. automotivetouchup.com

Shake the ever living hell out of those cans before you are about to use them.

And then when you think you've shaken them enough, shake them some more.

Or better yet, find just the right person to shake them for you.
