UNDERPOWERED? THE REAL DEAL!!!

Seems like a lot of people are complaining about how under powered these cars are, so thought I would do a little fact finding myself.

Did a HP to weight ratio comparison to some of what I would consider comparable cars from the years. Cars included were: Datsun 240z, Mazda RX7, VW GTI, Miata MX5 and CRX Si.

Guess which car came out on top??? If you said FRS/BRZ you were right!!! The only car even close was the 240z that has a 6 cylinder motor, enough said...

You got some stats or data we can see instead of simply stating the conclusion? It makes it easier to visualize.

While I 100% agree with your findings and your opinion that the twins are not underpowered, you and I are both living in the past. The "kids" today are spoiled by mundane family sedans, SUVs and mini-Vans that come from the factory with 260-295HP. These people movers are quick in a straight line which comes in handy when merging with traffic on a 70MPH (80MPH actual) interstate. They cannot fathom a sports car than cannot outrun these everyday cars from a stoplight or blow past them easily during a passing attempt even if said soccer mom driven appliance does not wished to be passed.

What they forget is that those vehicles would roll over or plow off the road, front end first, if they attempted to chase a twin through a slalom or a set of switch backs up in the hills.

They also ignore the fact that the twins are fast. They can reach a top speed of 145MPH which is something most of those family haulers cannot do because they have the aerodynamics of a brick. That type of top speed is also something that the sporty cars of the past you listed could not match.

You will never convince the ones that want more power that they do not need it and will seldom use it if they do pay the big bucks to get it. It will take years of experience and thousands of dollars wasted before they will come to that conclusion on their own.

Don't forget to include the fact that the average consumer now expects to be spoon fed information. The most research some will do is look at the brochure and that's being optimistic. Many people fail to look at the car as a whole in terms of what they're buying. It's like they see that HP/Torque specs in bold and bright red lettering and treat everything else as Egyptian.

These modern cars with high redlines take some getting used to as well. A lot of us are missing that low-end torque that our previous cars had. Our Twins perform better in almost every measurable way. Power delivery just feels different. My Old first-gen Celicas basically had truck motors, same with my MR2.

My Mazda 626 felt pretty fast... And this car has like 70 more hp and weighs a lot less. I think it's fast. *Shrugs*

At the track or autox, that's what they say... til my car make em run for their money.

So in the end, slow car isn't slow because of car. Slow car is slow, cuz of the driver.

My first review video where we track tested the stock FRS at Gingerman, I wanted to do a smart ass segment where Turbowski brought his V6 Accord Sedan on track.

We filmed it and the Accord just blew past on the mile straight but almost did not stop in the corner, after that Accord did not make it one lap before the brakes were absolutely faded out and parked so we never used the footage.

There is truth to the to the track/autox bit but of course 95% of the time these cars roll on the street, where they cant get out of their own way.

Old debate that will never die.
