how different is the second gen going to be? i mean, it would be one thing if it was radical but i think this evolutionary change is going to be okay sooner than many models out there.

everything i've read says its likely to use an engine from the ascent and similar subaru models, with a smoothed out exterior. No affirmation on a turbo so far, but there's been more info coming out in the past few weeks.

Yeah I think the twins have proven to be very reliable, with some quirks.

They figured out there was an issue in only a couple of months that is why not even all the 13 s were recalled.
They took 4 years to decide that it was bad enough for a recall on the ones that could fail.

Every thing we “know” was based upon one click bait website’s speculation and then spread by the others and forums such as this. Is the 2.4 possible? Yes. Is it probable? Likely. Is it for sure? Not by a long shot.
There will be no turbo. They have officially said that time and again. Only the internet thinks there will be.

Well they only said that about the 1st gen right? About having no turbo.

I don’t think the 2nd gen will get FI, but maybe T/S will throw us a curveball.

I have a 2019 Ascent. I would have had one of the very first ones in the state, but the dealer tried to pick my pocket, so I got one built in September 2018 from another dealer. I have never owned a car that had so many recalls and after almost two years of ownership, the moon roof still does not work. The 2017 BRZ that I bought in April 2018 had only oil changes and tire rotation so far. Hard to predict outcome. 1973 and 1977 Honda Civics perfect from new until we drove the wheels off. 1984 Dodge Caravan: total crap. Failure on the freeway almost killed my wife and family. The replacement was a new 1989 Mazda MPV: Perfect until we traded in for a 1998 MPV 4WD version. Again perfect and unstoppable. 2014 Subaru Forester: Perfect and gave it to my daughter when the Ascent arrived. In each case the car was a new design or a significant change. Note that in my situation, all the cars that have performed well were built in a Japanese factory as was the 2014 Forester and the 2017 BRZ in the Gunma plant. The two cars that I had the most trouble with were built in the USA. However, with the exception of the moon roof on the Ascent, Subaru has been able to address every problem and get it right the first time and its a keeper. Is it better to wait or be the first one on the block to get the shiny new car? Personally, I would wait until someone who's opinion I trust gets their hands on it and see what they think. No guarantee, but I would not do what a lot of people do when buying any tech item, that is keep waiting for the next year model for the upgrades and improvement. Then you will never make the move. It was January 2013 when I first saw the BRZ and wanted one until I got the 2017 (October build date) in April of 2018. One could say it was worth the wait for the upgrades, but it was more of everything else going on that kept me away. My friends got tired of hearing me talk about the car and thought they were seeing things when I actually drove up in one. Now they can't wait for me to stop talking about the new one on the way. Maybe I will have to buy one and make them happy again. If you don't already have a 86/BRZ, don't put it off. If you have one now, you can wait a little to see if it is compelling enough to jump.

A motor swap will probably be your only option then

At least there are lots of good Toyota engines to choose from.
I understand if you would be frustrated over troubles with the early FA20’s. I think they have sorted everything out though and it’s a fun engine (IMO). So I think it would be worth considering a 2016+ 86/BRZ

Overheating issue happens after pushing the car hard at the track... The 2020 and up model has the issue resolved... The 86 can't even hit the track without any oil cooling mods

And the transmission issue is not widespread. The 86's TOB can't even last 50k lol

At the end of the day, the fa20 is an inferior motor compared to the k20c1
