Update:

Mazda confirmed to Motor1.com that the next MX-5 Miata will be electrified, but the extent is still unknown. Here is the official statement.

"Mazda is seeking to electrify the MX-5 Miata in an effort to have all models feature a form of electrification by 2030. We will work hard to make it a lightweight, affordable, open two-seater sports car in order to meet the needs of customers."

It could have a relatively small and lightweight setup that provides torque fill and only twenty extra horsepower/torque, or maybe they drop displacement to the 1.5L used in other markets and hit 200hp/200tq. More weight over the rear maybe. Could be good.

It’s not “either/or”. They can have a miata that’s only ICE, a trim with some type of battery assist and even a full ev option - they can easily sell 3 different miatas at the same time to satisfy the market and their electrification plans.

They may need to do something like this because road racing is a major component of Mazdas North American strategy and batteries are not conducive to road racing at the point in time from a production car standpoint.

Belted-alternator-starter assist (or maybe a gear driven setup on the output side where the starter and flywheel normally go) counts as "hybrid", that's probably what they're gonna go for. 50lbs of battery will get you pretty good results with that, and you lose the starter motor to save some weight.

Nice build. I like the way they kept the weight and distribution close to original. I agree with what was said about not turning it into a speed monster, but keeping within the specs of the original.

The only disappointing spot is the range (100ish miles) and the cost (20,000 Pounds ($27,000)).

The range you could fix with some tradeoff but probably couldn't double it without giving up the trunk and the weight.

The expense, well, yea, no thanks.

Still an interesting exercise.

does that mean that if you take it to the track and drive a few laps you'll then have to wait 3 hrs to recharge it enough to be able to drive it home?

Proof of concept that you CANT have your cake and eat it too!

Yes, I would think that is exactly what it means. You'd likely burn through the battery pretty fast on a track, although it would probably be more than "a few" if you started with a full charge.

To my mind, this type of conversion would go much better in a vehicle with a frame construction. Then you could build a new frame with a decent size battery, basically building a sled like most EVs.

It would be heavier but the weight would be low.

A purpose built ev is going to beat any mixed power vehicle. Skateboards are good for family cars, but a proper sportscar puts the driver down low. The future of sports evs will be rwd or awd with batteries behind the driver. Somebody might play with design and put batteries in the front and behind or down the middle too, but the best performers will have read weight bias. Eventually we may see frame integrated batteries but we really only need so much energy and range, especially as charging voltage rises.
