I’ve created an exhaust mess

My son and I are fixing up a 2013 FRS as a first car for him, and I’ve created a bit of an exhaust mess. The car has a TRD 1.0 quad outlet exhaust and I recently added a JDL UEL catted header. It’s loud as a combo but just as annoying it resonates a bunch too.

I don’t really want to nuke the header, as I like the power band change, but the bumper is cut for the quad exhaust, so it’s a bit hard to go to something different without bodywork.

Can I add a larger resonator? I don’t think that’s likely going to change volume, but maybe cut down on the drone?

Thoughts?

The problem is the TRD exhaust. The USDM TRD exhaust with barrel muffler is known to be quite loud and raspy when you get headers/remove cats

There are other aftermarket exhausts offered with quad tips. Even if the bumper is cut for quad tips, you can also opt for dual tip exhausts.
  • The cut-out for quad tips simply enlarges the original dual tip factory bumper clearance. Dual tip exhausts will fit just fine under the bumper (albeit the tips won't fill up all of the exhaust cutout area, leaving some empty space). You don't need any bodywork for dual tip exhausts unless the empty space bothers you.

Blitz, Fujitsubo, HKS, Greddy, and others offer quad tip versions if you are so inclined. Many more options abound if you are willing to consider dual tip

Any places to start looking for quiet exhausts? I don’t need him waking up the neighbors.

FTSpeed, Japan Parts, CounterSpace Garage, and Kami Speed are a few to start

It also comes down to what your budget it.

X2 With a Catless header, 3" Catted front-pipe and CSG exhaust my car is barely louder than stock.

You didn't mention what front pipe you had on the car, but ensuring that you at least have the stock catted front pipe typically helps with rasp/noise. An aftermarket catted front pipe may help more than the stock one.

You’re fixing up a car for a kid as their first vehicle. Kill as much power as possible. Get custom headers made with 3/4” primaries and three extra catalytic converters. You want to make the car as slow and boring as you can. There are too few of these cars as is, no need to hasten the demise of another one in the hands of a young driver.

Trying different exhaust is going down a rabbit hole for sure, because sound is so subjective, and results will vary based on driving style and mods.

If I were you, I'd go to a Helmholtz tube calculator and then add one of those. If done right, it will kill the drone and reduce overall sound some as well.

Somebody on the forums mentioned cutting out the OEM TRD resonator and welding in a vibrant ultra quiet helped quite a bit with the typical TRD drone/resonance. I found catless UEL+TRD pretty unbearable. Lasted two weeks before selling the catback.

If you wanted a one and done a CSG touring is going to be quiet, then weld on dual tips of your choice.

Greddy Supreme SP might be a good option as well. I have no personal experience, but my understanding is that it is only slightly louder than stock as just a Catback, but wakes up nicely with a header and front pipe..

Greddy Supreme SP Catback only..

Greddy Supreme SP with UEL Catted Header and Motive Catted Front pipe..

Greddy SP droned quite a bit with my gruppe-s header. Also had drone issues with a fujistubo axleback. Catted header may help a little in that department.

I was wondering about that, trying a resonator and seeing what difference that makes. Of course doing that would potentially kill resale of it, but it may be worth the experiment.

I know you're being tongue in cheek, but it was his grandfather's car who couldn't drive it anymore due to health reasons. Super low miles (22k), but not particularly well cared for, so it's been a fun father-son project.
