If you're looking to feel sporty and upgrade something just because, get the Exedy stage 1 clutch. It has a heavier clutch feel, but drives like stock. I put about 330WHP and 250wtq through a turbocharger and it never slipped, so if you boost the car in the future you'll be all set. It's also cheap and works with the oem flywheel. Exedy also is the manufacturer of the OEM clutch (like many) so you can trust that it'll be a reliable clutch, like the oem exedy replacement.

Dont let "upgrade" fever get you. Even if you do track days (assuming NA tuned hp levels) you will be fine with an OEM replacement. Im still on the stock clutch with 50k and 5 years of hard track abuse and I plan on replacing it with an Exedy OEM replacement when it does go.

For reference: last year the car saw 2500 TRACK miles and 1000 road miles. The car has probably seen about 12k track miles.

When the time comes, I've got an Exedy stage 1 clutch and lightweight FW ready to go in. I primarily want it for the lightened FW, but I wouldn't mind a stronger clutch either. Will throw in a strengthened fork, pivot and revised TOB at the same time.

Hoping this will be an OEM plus like upgrade, but we'll see.

all this talk...

if you're doing autocross/road race/daily driving, the stock one is perfectly fine.

if you're making power power than stock, or if you're doing some type of drag racing/drifting where you're riding the clutch more, then you should look into something with more torque capacity or better materials for performance under high heat conditions.

I ran my car 60k miles and a track event or two every month for 3 years. never had issues with the factory clutch that came with the car.

For something like this, I usually suggest people to consider a complete kit such as ORC.

All the benefits of a lightened flywheel but with a clutch pressure plate that has a better design for smoother engagement vs a traditional OE pressure place replacement design.

To each their own.

I'd never heard of ORC before so that's pretty interesting. I've already got the Exedy sitting in my garage though. Was there anything negative specific to the Exedy stage 1 clutch/LWFW combo that you'd heard or experienced?

Visually the Exedy OEM replacement is exactly the same as stock. And considering the stock one is made by Exedy chances are it is the same one Toyobaru is going to sell you. Just make sure it comes with the updated TOB, which it should unless it is NOS.

no, but think of it this way:

any clutch kit that is sold by itself is always limited by the factory pressure plate design. this becomes a problem when you run those fancy "heavy duty race puck" clutches... or like a Stage 3 or Stage 24 or whatever.

for lighter clutch kits this isn't a huge problem, but when you run more aggressive friction material or PP with higher clamping force, you're stuck with a clutch that's not very easy to drive as a daily.

complete kits like ORC, OS Giken, Exedy, and others (several US companies also make similar kits) are way better if you're 100% going the flywheel/clutch upgrade route at the same time. ends up about the same cost but better feel and performance.

OK I see what you're saying. Yeah the pressure plate on the exedy stage 1 does look very similar to the OEM design. Luckily it's only rated to 203 wtq so shouldn't be a huge increase in clamping force or friction material type.

From most of the guys I've spoken with who've used this kit (15805FW), they say the clutch feel is very similar to stock. So I think it should be ok. If anything, I'm more worried about a handful of guys who've reported DD issues like occasionally getting locked out of certain gears or dealing with chatter from the 12.7 lbs FW. The latter I can deal with, but the former would bother me.

I personally have been rolling with ACT 6 puck racing clutch! I will say it’s not the best for daily driving but it really puts out! Great when I go down to beach bend Kentucky and race. If I were to get a street clutch it would definitely come from ACT! These things will last you forever! And they are reasonable priced

Don't waste your money on it? That's pretty good advice.
