One of my friends was "self insured" and his mistake caused a seven car crash.
He ended up paying a payment plan for many years.
Yes insurance is very expensive , but "self insurance" will end up costing a lot more.

So did that friend not even have liability insurance?

What @spagti said above.

To be fair though I did tell the OP to get it on a machine to check in order to be sure because IMO the pics aren't enough to tell either way.

Of course since the OP likely won't fix it himself and probably won't want to spend the money to do so this might all be a pointless conversation

Or didn't have enough to cover the other 6 cars worth of damage.

That's true. That is a big mess to cover.

Wow.. that's legal there? Plenty of uninsured motorists here but it's not legal so someone doing that here has extra legal issues/tickets to deal with also.

Here there is now what is called Compulsory Third Party Personal Injury Insurance (CTP) that covers injury to people.
But it's not compulsory to insure for damage to cars exploring new houses or shops.
Someone even ended up crashing into a police building yesterday.

I got t-boned by a lady with no license, no insurance, not her car, blah, blah, blah. Moved out of state before they tracked her down on the bench warrant.

I get a $75 check from the City of Missoula every month. No indication of when they will stop, or a total amount. Free money!

If I would have been hurt I would have sued, but my old '83 Toyota just took it on as "character".

It takes work to bend the frame. This bumped the (Nameless) header into the crank pulley, but only lightly. Engine still OK. But the frame was slightly bent because the crash beam folded in and wasn't really able to do its thing. 4" gate post at somewhere over 40mph, popped the 18" concrete setting right out of the ground.

I am talking about collision on your own car.
Liability is mandatory insurance.

When I lived in Virginia, almost 10 years ago, you could pay a $500 uninsured motorist fee and be on your way. You received the same ticket if you were caught driving without insurance.

Not that it’s a good idea, but it certainly isn’t illegal.

The OP is located in Sydney, Australia. Insurance requirements might be different there.
