And what TC said, it's all downhill from here for the platform, especially in the looks department. No way can they resist making it uglier to keep up with the rest of their lineup. |

..patience folks, we can't expect Toyota to be hyping up the next 86 when they are about to launch the next Supra..a connect of mine said internal documentation within Toyota have hinted a 2nd gen won't happen until 2020 which makes sense considering the facelift would be 4 years old then..

I think the Supra is a bad sign for this car...
How many other Japanese manufacturers have two sports cars in their lineup? 350Z and GTR are the only ones that come to mind and the difference in power and price between the two is huge. Even if they do make both, it likely means the BRZ/FRS will never get much more power from the factory. A 300HP BRZ/86 wouldn't be much slower than a 350HP and likely much heavier Supra. |

Why Toyota did not put an updated 2JZ in that car is beyond me. The Supra IS the engine.

Besides, they have to evaluate the fully electric competition, in particular the Volkswagen Group (to begin, it will be Porsche Mission E). It's very likely they want to prevent a Volkswagen hegemony, so they have to electrify Lexus before Audi and Porsche become too strong, therefore not too many people to develop a new 86. It's possible they decide to give S-FR the green light, or (completely the opposite) they start developing the GR Super Sport, also in these cases not too many people to develop a new 86. Anyway, Toyota and Subaru will probably sustain some loss (= disastrous sales numbers) in the sports sector (new hybrid 86, new hybrid WRX STI, ...), because of their DCT hostility. I will not buy a CVT crossed with a four-speed auto gearbox (as the Lexus LC500h) 86. CVT is a good transmission for utilitarian vehicles, that should be sold without paddle shifters. Since all this is speculation I will throw my thoughts on the "Supra" into the mix.
I do not think that it will have any impact on the plans for the FRS whatsoever. It is not and apples to apples situation and the idea that it would replace/eliminate is like saying that Chevy shouldn't have a base model Camaro since they make Corvettes. We are looking at two totally different target markets and buyer demographics with the two cars. Toyota has plenty of resources to develop both and they will continue to do so if that is the plan. I will not speculate how much longer they will offer the 86/BRZ but whatever period of time that is was likely planned before the first car ever came off the assembly line and the "Supra" (that name has not been made official yet) will not change that plan.

Hell - if the 86 platform got as much development as the Z platform, I'd be happy. Lots of improvements made since the first 350Z came out. The current 370 is by far the better version.

It is a pretty narrow niche that the Twins sell into. What we can be (relatively) sure of is
1-It wont be a convertible 2-It wont gain much more power 3-It wont become a shooting-brake 4-It will stay under 3000 lbs or even lose weight 5-It wont lose the back seats 6-It wont get rid of the boxer engine The Hybrid angle might be a good way to freshen up the concept while staying in the niche. Some of the benefits might be more acceleration from the same HP due to electric assist. Also better fuel mileage for lower fuel cost. The fact that it would also attract buyers from outside of the gear-head world by appealing to tree-huggers would not hurt. If they want me to buy another one, it would have to go to a conventional L4 or V6 engine. |

Right! It would be very cool! My buddy has two Delorean's. One concourse car with only a few miles and one of the ten factory turbocharged versions... The doors go UUUUPP! Anyway, I photochopped the drawing of an FR-S to look like one.
