The UK is pushing the pedestrian requirements because it will supposedly save lives for all the small/tight slow-going rdwys that are apparently slathered with pedestrians.
I can tell you all, that in the 8 years I have been in insurance, I have seen very few claims involving autos and pedestrians where the pedestrian was not killed. Not because of the shape of the vehicle, but because of their speed. Very few american rds (other then in NY) have speeds less then 45mph. Just as a comparison, 35mph will slaughter a human, or go through a brickwall. I'm really not sure how changing the shape/height of the front end helps in the majority of accidents. The way I see it, this is just the UK pulling a "California" and making up rules for cars to be sold there, throwing around their weight. California did it with the smog/emissions requirements, but you don't see all the europeans with the same smog equipement. Heck, you don't even see the rest of the 50 states following suit. The problem is that it costs a lot more for a company to have two different front ends then to have two different types of smog set ups. I love the UK, but I hate this recent rule. It better not make the front end ugly. I've got faith in Toyota though: if they made it look hot already, hopefully they can work their magic and not ruin it.

IIRC Jaguar has a pop-up mechanism for the bonnet that is activated upon impact, kind of an airbag system for the bonnet which rises it in the appropriate height. Could be a solution although it might raise the price.

Besides that, a proportional raise of the whole design might keep the harmony of the design lines and along with it provide more headroom for the interior. Just a thought, could be wrong though...

I know that with the MINI all they did was raise the height and change the shape of the hood. It has to be raised to a certain height and a certain angle to be legal. The MINI was ugly after the change. It initially had this "bulldog" look, and now looks pointy. I would really like the jaguar fix, but I highly doubt they would go with the comlexity, cost, or weight of such a system. I hope it's not ugly. Poor Toyota, can you imagine finally knocking a ball out of the design park in decades and then it all hinging on the front end change to meet one countries requirements...I hope it works out for them.

What about what honda does? I know they use slightly different front ends on a couple of cars, but one in particular there is a big difference, the Integra, theres the JDM front end and the USDM front end.

(P.S. I'm more interested in maybe a reason for it then trying to point you out for wrong info, just a curious person.)

There's always a chance that they would follow Honda's example, but are there any toyota vehicle that have used this method in the past? Does toyota have a history of using this method of dealing with the pedestrian safety law? I would love it if they went this route, but if toyota hasn't used this in the past, it could be unlikely. Not to say that they wouldn't implement something new for this awesome vehicle, but we can always hope.

Every automakers should make one special version for the UK to meet their stupid requirement and make them pay extra for the expense. Why should the rest of the world suffer . If all automakers stick together I'm sure they'll do away with the requirement rather quickly.
