Eyes finally quit burning. I look like Stewie and my vision is still blurry but, the pain has stopped. May or may not be the bottle of New Riff that is almost empty.

got paged at 4:30am with an issue with our systems (I'm oncall). struggled with investigating it for 45 mins in all our dashboards and shit. had to phone a friend (manually page a teammate) for help. realized as he was logging on it might be due to something we've been testing in prod (HUGE NO-NO BUT MY TEAM INSISTS ON DOING IT THIS WAY).

so he checked some stuff and I brought it up to him, and he said that's quite possibly the issue. so I disabled the test shit and now I'm waiting for things to come back to normal (hopefully).

He went back to sleep and I feel depressed I had to even contact him when it's something I arguably should've known (I kinda suspected it but didn't check well enough till he went online).

I wouldn't worry about it, unless your teammates are complete pricks.

If you've been doing on-call long enough everyone has to phone a friend on occasion. I'm sure at some point you'll get to return the favor for someone else.

A couple weeks ago I bought a Poke bowl for lunch. I wanted a Japanese beer to go with it. I went to 4 different stores and not a Japanese beer to be found. Since then, I've been noticing the beer cooler at my local store doesn't have the same selection, and they are spreading out the product they have so shelves don't look so empty. I've also been noticing less cuts of red meat. Good luck finding a tri-tip this weekend here.

Anyone else notice any item shortages at their local stores?

To be honest he's usually a prick.

When similar situations have come up I've offered to buy him a meal or drink or whatever and he refuses because "it's my job".

Also remember that no man is an island. Troubleshooting, and problem-solving in general, are often collaborative efforts. Sometimes the pieces fall into place just because we discuss them with a colleague.

I once worked in a place like that. My department made a couple of unfortunate hires over several years. Those snowballed into a number of really bad decisions and turned a great place to work into a snake pit. The ruling clique would sabotage their perceived enemies' evaluations and drum up reasons to try to fire them. At 67 I gave up trying to fix it and retired.

Henry Kissinger once said, "the reasons fights among academics are so viscous is the stakes are so small." It's true. You put a bunch of people who are highly educated and comparatively poorly paid into an enclosed space and some of them invariably turn into scorpions.
