"Tonality" refers to a the quality of a sequence of notes coming from or sounding like they originate from a certain key. Wood doesn't affect the "tonality" of anything. The notes you play are "tonal" or not, and determine the "tonality" of what you're playing. The words you are looking for are "tone quality" or "timbre."

"Tone deaf" refers to an inability to distinguish differences in pitches or frequency response and, in actuality, is extremely rare. Almost anyone, with enough patience and/or training, can learn to distinguish pitches. Being "tone deaf" to an issue (often said in political news coverage) is a stupid, meaningless phrase. You can be deaf to an issue as a figure of speech, but being "tone deaf" to an issue is .. well... a stupid phrase. Wish they'd stop saying that.

Now, as far as the wood or other materials chosen for the body of a solid-body guitar or bass, I'd agree with most of the other posts. The construction of the neck (with a nod given to through-built necks that run the entire length of the instrument), bridge, nut, pickups, preamps, and strings would be the greatest contributors, but anything that comes into contact with the vibration (which is pretty much everything) has SOME effect on the resultant sound. An Alembic bass sounds like no other bass; they weigh a ton for their size, and have an incredible sustain. That ain't all due to the pickups.

Now, back to the topic...

You are correct about timbre, unfortunately most people would not know wth I was talking about had I used it. Although tonality is considered by several dictionaries as a synonym to timbre.

Also in French(the word has a French and greek origins) the word is a synonym of Sonorité which translate to English as "tone". Therefore in French the word tonality (sonorité) is interchangeable to a certain extent with timbre.

Yeah I don't have the extensive musical knowledge that comes with classical/professional musical instruction (in fact I had stopped playing a few years ago and just now trying to get back into it, in fact I bought a Fender Baja Telecaster yesterday since I had no more electric guitars. Things I've owned over the years: 2010 Gibson Les Paul, 1994 Gibson Es 135, 2000 Fender Std strat) but I am still quite knowledgeable in the domain compared to the common folks.

Really have to get back to playing on a regular basis though. @MuseChaser & @babydriver you guys think about 30min-1hr per day(or 2 days, depending on availability) would be good to get me back to being able to play shit(in other words, is it enough to have my skills come back)?

Thanks for the reply. I can't get the quote function to work now for some reason...

You may or may not be correct assuming that most folks wouldn't know what you're talking about if you used the word "timbre." In any case, let's join together and use the right words anyway and lift up the masses!

You're correct about the roots of the French word "sonorité." English.. sonority. Pertaining to sound. The root comes from Latin, from whence sprung the romance languages... French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian being the big five.

You are incorrect about the words "tonality" and "sonority" being synonyms. The french word is, appropriately enough, "tonalité," and it, too, refers to the key center of a piece of music and not the tone quality or timbre of the instrument or sound being produced.

A bientot, et merci beaucoup!

Barry

Quote thingie still isn't working?...

You (fumanch) wrote...

I had to laugh. In my circles (classical and jazz), "play shit" refers to playing really poorly. If you want to do that, don't worry about practicing..

In all seriousness, the great thing about music is that it's a never-ending quest. I've been playing professionally for decades, and I still, at times, feel like I'm just getting started... I even still have days when I feel like I "play shit." The key is to not worry about it.. just enjoy the journey, the process of getting better and discovering each new "layer" as you dig deeper and deeper into whatever sounds move you.

The key, as it is with all things, is to play frequently.. at LEAST daily. The amount, especially if you practice efficiently, is much less important than how often you practice. Don't worry about how much, just discipline yourself to play consistently and constantly. Again, ENJOY it and don't get frustrated. You'll have times when you make an incredible amount of progress quickly and you'll be ecstatic, and there'll be times when you feel like you're not getting anywhere for weeks (or even months). Keep playing, and don't worry about it.

I tell all my students to aim for 30-45 min/day. Most don't, and most make minimal progress weekly. The ones that DO practice that amount daily or more are the ones that improve quickly and, as a consequence, enjoy playing more, so they play more, so they improve more, so they play more... it's a never-ending positive cycle. If you don't practice much, you won't get much better, and you won't enjoy playing, so you won't practice much..etc... and you spiral downward. Just play every day, smile, and enjoy it.

All my best!
