Very good read. Issue is that when you have a bunch of people newish to the modifying scene you usually have people with limited knowledge of aftermarket products and/or lack of funds for quality products. So what happens? They get a subscription to street scene and go for the knock-offs who have pages upon pages of advertisements at the "right" price.

Meh, IP theft is the name of the game these days and nobody seems to care, and if all you have to protect yourself is the IP, but have massive overhead and inefficient business, the clock's ticking.
True innovation requires more than just a design. You can hardly copyright a vented hood. The tooling that Seibon needs to make it is largely the same as Voltex. There is minimal R&D in hoods. What this comes down to is production costs. Seibon is apparently more efficient and made a similar vented hood for less money. If Voltex was more seriously involved in R&D they should have aspects of their hood that are more complicated and difficult to copy. For example better FEA that can allow them to get away with thinner sections with better materials for a lighter design that would be difficult or impossible to reproduce with more conventional and cheaper production techniques. That is the innovation that companies are going to have to work at if they don't want to get ripped off.

If Voltex did take the design to the wind tunnel then there are certainly more R&D costs that need to be recouped than compared to Seibon. The problem is most people are okay with a knock off copy of a product that may not have all the same performance benefits but will at least look the same. Seibon isn't necessarily more efficient in manufacturing, they just don't have the costs to offset and can probably get away with using materials of lesser quality than Voltex.

The issue with a lot of the real 'JDM' manufacturers is that being for their Domestic market, they've been rather insulated from competition. Japanese abhor buying foreign. If all of the JDM companies are using labour intensive manufacturing with Japanese salary and wages, competing internationally will be fantastically difficult. Interesting thing, is while I may sound pro-knock-off, I'm absolutely not. It's something that I may myself have to address in the near future, and it may be tough. That being said, using knock offs as an excuse for your own inefficiency and meh business practice is not the solution. If they will just complain instead of reworking their processes and plans, they are doomed, and are themselves a significant part of the problem.
