Gen 1 car value?

So, with the next generation I’ve heard mixed reviews. Some are saying the GT86 prices will take a slight jump due to some being a little disappointed with the GR probably being a mini Supra with a Subaru legacy engine. Others are saying that the first gen will take a typical hit in value due to the second gen being release. What’s the consensus on here?

We have zero facts on a next generation. None!
That said you can look at the values of past cars and guess with four options.

1) They drop it as a model completely. This leaves only the very limited numbers already made and will force the value up.

2) The second gen is pretty much the same as it is now and is more of a facelift than a second gen. Values of used would stay around what they are now with only minor changes.

3) The next gen totally sucks and fans of the first want noting to do with it. First gen goes up and holds firm.

4) Next gen rock's people's world and everybody ditches the first. First gen value takes a shit and never recovers.

All in all I would not expect to see huge swings in value either way but the laws of supply and demand will determine what they are worth.

I'd say we're on track to have some more depreciation no matter what with covid causing a huge flood of used cars to hit the market from rental companies and repos, without any buyers lined up to take em. The economy would have to stabilize and the 2nd gen would need to be cancelled for us to see any appreciation in the short term imo.

In the UK the virus is playing strange games with the 2nd hand market.

If the Gen 1 prices do creep up it will be in about another 6 to 7 years, by then Gen2 would be in the market, established good/bad rep and people will start to look back at the Gen1 wearing those funny rose coloured tinted glasses.

Maybe by then it will be a featured car in Fast and Furious #58 and the price will go through the roof.

If you have a white Base Camry or Hyundai you may take a hit by the fleet sales but I doubt the Twins will be impacted much if at all.

Never going to se appreciation no matter what just slower depreciation.

if they don't ever make another model, we might see prices stagnate in 10-15 years, but that's going to be about it.

Let us know how much you'd pay for a first gen once second gen is out.

With the global COVID-19 pandemic worsening, especially in the US (and with it the financial fortunes of all companies), it unfortunately seems like your option 1) becomes increasingly more likely as time goes on.

The Gen1 is a "nice" car, the design has stood the test of time, it's a neat little package, and is sought after although there are more about so prices don't reflect its desirability.

I think it'll be like the ole 240z, people will want them, the platform is so adaptable to suit all tastes.

I have thought option one the most probable for a while now. I don’t write for a click bait site though so few believe it.

Prices will continue drop most likely. Some special editions will hold their value a bit better, but still depreciate until a certain point.

Eventually, I wouldn’t be surprised if they started to go back up in value, but only marginally. Like in X number of years, they go as low as 6-7k and then climb back up close to 10. That seems to be fairly common for many Japanese RWD sports cars.

Who knows though? Still no real concise info on this 2nd gen car yet

You mean the humble Twin is not like a Porsche GT3 RS or McLaren F1? You can’t just buy one, stick it under a blanket for 10 years, then sell it for $millions?
