For the past 2 or 3 weeks the next apartment building over (90% sure) has had a smoke alarm going off every couple minutes. Probably a dying battery.

Yesterday I was outside on the curb checking my mail and I noticed this one guy who lives in that building hanging out outside (he does this a lot). So I figure I'll see if he's aware and if not, let him know and see if he'll offer to look into it out of courtesy.

So I walk over, say hi. Then I bring it up, saying "hey, I've noticed lately that there's a smoke alarm that's been going off and it seems like it's coming from your building."

Before I could continue with anything else, he goes: "I wouldn't know anything about that.'

So I say "ok, thanks" and start turning around to walk back to my building, and he goes "by the way your car is loud when you start it up, so tit-for-tat."

And I sort of went...

Said "uh I see" and just walked away.

So basically... he does or he doesn't know whose alarm is dying and he took it to mean I was complaining and so he wanted to have a comeback with his own complaint??

Meanwhile I rarely ever leave these days before 9am or after 9pm. So it's not like I'm starting my car in sleep/quiet hours, and I only come and go maybe two or three times a day max. So I'm not constantly cold starting / revving.

And besides that, I don't even have headers, just an axleback.

Anywho guess common courtesy isn't a thing anymore on either end.
i've never worked near an apartment building and not heard a smoke detector chirping.

Since WFH, our company has been very heavy with the use of MS Teams, as soon as the computer is booted up Teams is ready to go, showing your availability etc.. move away from the computer for a short period the little 'green' icon changes to 'yellow' and a timer clicks in showing how long the person has been away..

I don't like it as it feels like you are having to constantly keep your computer busy to keep the little 'green' icon fucking green.. yuck!! I need a break from this shit!!

Can't switch off teams as that is the primary tool for contacting colleagues.... Double yuck!!!
There are plenty of ways for an employer to audit computer activity from minute to minute. ...easily.

Here's a fun little thing to consider.

On the flip side, do you want to be noticed for having 100% activity? o.0

Well look at that.
I stand corrected.
Although I don’t see a cute angle there.

You can prevent Teams from launching at startup under settings, but as you said, it is the primary form of communication in many companies. You can't really opt out from using it.

While it varies from company to company and even manager to manager, unless there are complaints about someone being unresponsive or not getting work done, I doubt many managers have the time or desire to babysit everyone's Teams status. While a metric driven department like customer service may be more likely for it to be monitored, IT or marketing may be quite lax.

In my experience, people get themselves in a lot more trouble trying to get around such things than they do by just having their status go to away if they get a cup of coffee or feed the pets. Downloading malware thinking it is a program to move the mouse cursor, using a VPN on-network so web traffic isn't logged, and so on. Those types of actions make a lot more noise and show an intent to get around controls and exhibit behaviors that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.

I get that different companies have different cultures, but the intent here is to use a lot of words to say "Unless you're missing deadlines and ignoring IMs and emails all day, you're probably worrying about it too much."

It just feels strange.. Much like a phone ringing takes precedence over a conversation.. Teams seems to be controlling the day..
