My dad took his commission for the sale of my house, but then turned around and bought me an Ipad. I was pretty shocked, so now I am looking at something for my parents in return. They have always wanted a safe for documents, I am thinking about going and getting them a nice one from this local place or possibly a smaller gun safe. I will have to see how much space they have for one.

Even a smaller 24 gun safe weighs about 350/400# so be aware if it's traveling up stairs at any point lol.

Costco used to carry them for <$600

Yeah I am aware. Their house is single level and a pretty open floor plan. There is a safe manufacture/importer local to me so that is who I will likely use. I already have one of their safes as do a few friends and we have been happy with them.

Safes are a funny thing. If you ever get burgled, they think anything locked up has to be full of cash and gold bars.

When we were burgled in 2014, I had all our documents in a small fire retardant safe. They took the safe. I bet they were very disappointed when they got it open and found that it was full of only documents and family pictures, and they probably got thrown in a dumpster. If our documents were in a box they could open and look at, I bet we would still have them. Smash and grab burglars don't want your documents, and if a pro wants them, a safe would slow them down for about a couple minutes most.

My brother the cop has seen bolted down safes removed from floors by burglars with sawsalls or chainsaws.

something to think about.

I have heard of stuff like that happening too. That is why I am not a big fan of putting safes in a garage, too easy to hook up to a truck and yank out lagged to the concrete floor or not. The way I see it, instances of safes being stolen is much smaller then instances of items being stolen.

So get a safe and put it right there next to your valuables... But have the latter just inconveniently stashed and in boring bins that they don't bother looking. Leave the safe with a token something so you don't get revenge burglary, but effectively empty...

Get the biggest heaviest one you can. Keep real good stuff in a safety deposit.

Or leave something really messed up inside. And a tracking device. And a grenade.

If it's just for documents, a better solution might be a scanner and a cloud service. I've done that over the past year. Scans are considered as valid as originals for the most part.

If you still want the originals, a safe deposit box should suffice.

Some documents can't be scanned to be valid. Nearest safe deposit box is 35 miles away. Dad needs a real safe for his guns anyway. He only has a few but just has them up in the attic.
