The thing that impresses me the most is all the complex engineering that cannot fail. And don't make me think about the tolerances!

Send a message via AIM to Racecomp Engineering
A good friend of mine helped get this thing up there. Apparently they're pretty pleasantly surprised that it's gone so smoothly.

I can only imagine. It's a Herculean task. I'm always envious of folks who get to work on these kinds of things. Congrats to your friend.

First image produced by Telescope while undergoing alignment of its mirrors. "The unified image itself shows the infrared light from the 2MASS J17554042+6551277. The “spikes” around the star result from the infrared light diffracting over the hexagonal shape of the space telescope’s primary mirror. Surrounding the star are some distant galaxies, which are likely billions of light years away, NASA officials said. The red color was chosen to optimize the visual contrast. "

We have to figure out how to not go extinct first. You know, like we did on Star Trek.

I think so. On the up side, we've contained a fusion reaction for five seconds. Bummer about the next century. This one's already quite a challenge.

If we are going to use the Star Trek universe then we have nothing to worry about. Throughout the different generations they came back in time no less than 10 occasions to save humanity. Maybe they have already saved us and we don't know it!

The only things they don't/can't touch are the near extinction events that caused them to exist in the first place.
All in all, in that universe, there needs to be the near extinction so that the survivors can develop to the point to prevent the full extinction. Classic cause and affect loop situation.
