Windshield expressly excluded from warranty coverage? ...

So I have a crack in the windshield that started (apparently) from where the windshield is attached at the hood (about center) and goes from there. I have no recollection of having a rock (or anything) hit it. Are there any situations where glass can be covered under a warranty or am I just going to my insurance co?

Also, anything I should be aware of/wary of in replacing a windshield on this car (zero chance of repair)? TIA.

Start digging into the fine print of your warranty paperwork paying special attention to the conditions and exceptions clauses.

If there's no rock chip that started it, the problem could be structural. A goog glass technician should be able to tell you whether or not it was caused by a rock.

If you do end up getting a new one and have to run it through your insurance, don't let your insurance company dictate to you who can replace it or what parts to use. I would definitely go OEM on the glass. I've been burned with a faulty replacement windshield that had a flaw in it. Needless to say my insurance company was the one that called the glass company who did the work.

If the problem was not due to a rock hitting the glass, then the manufacturer needs to step up and help you solve the issue. Remember, in situations like this, the DEALER is not your friend. However the MANUFACTURER can relieve some of the burden if the dealer refuses to step up.

Thanks. I was feeling like the same thing. And yes, I am aware of dictating to my insurance carrier on parts/service - I've been there before. But thanks for reminding me.

Not sure about the US but when I had to replace my windshield (it got hit by what I am convinced was the Death Star) they looked it up and there were no aftermarket ones even listed for these cars. Took a couple of weeks to get one through Toyota.

I had my windshield replaced in 2018. I paid out of pocket, and the total was $280, and that was in the expensive Bay Area. You have to replace the windshield and molding.

Would have cost me much more to drive to the Bay area!

Heh.

Funny story.

About a year or two in to owning mine I got a chipped piece of paint right on the roof where the edge meets the windshield. Happened to bring my BRZ to the dealer for some service (I think it was the time my OEM o2 sensor died and they replaced it under warranty). Well, the chipped spot was rusting and I asked if they could also get that fixed under warranty (wasn't sure if they'd do it or not).

Anyway, they ask the service manager, who looks at the rusty chip and then looks at my windshield.

He sees that the manufacturer of the windshield is not Subaru, it's some Japanese name from Gunma.

He insists I've had it replaced with non-OEM glass and that whoever did it probably damaged my paint, so he refuses to have it fixed under warranty.

So of course I respond and say no that's the glass it's had from factory, and he walks me over to a couple random cars in the showroom, shows me that they say Subaru on them as the manufacturer. So then I walk over to another BRZ being sold and immediately I see the same company that's inscribed on mine. Arashi or something. I then ask a couple friends with FRS' what their windshield says.

Bingo, Arashi (or whatever it was).

So basically, my windshield glass came from Toyota (and probably all BRZ's since they're made with mostly the same parts, in the same factory).

But the service manager still didn't care and would not have the paint fixed.

The end.

Well I'm still ahead of the game having windshield coverage deleted on my policy (-$325 a year x 8 years), but it's still gonna hurt...

Just called. Speedy Glass...$550 installed. Came down a lot in a month.

Edit...they called back. Can do it for $343.00
Definitely not worth having windshield coverage on my policy. If I paid a $500 deductible, the ins company would be making money off every change.

You would not pay a $500 deductible for a $343 charge. Some companies you can get a $100 glass deductible on you policy.
