The space shuttle is such a good looking craft, it's a shame that they stopped flying it..

Another pilot story for you. Once, my astronaut buddy flew up from Houston for a visit in a T-38 with NASA markings. That caused some excitement at my small hometown field, emptying out the coffee shop next to the ramp (I never got to fly in it though).

After lunch we took up my usual rental, a Piper Turbo Arrow, to do some some sight seeing in uncontrolled airspace. I offered the controls to him and agreed to have him demo some maneuvers. He then did some things well outside normal Commercial pilot checkrides and near the limits of the airframe and powerplant for a Normal category GA aircraft. He's never flown the type before but was comfortable doing anything with it, expected I guess for a former Top Gun instructor pilot.

Returning to my home sea level field from about 8,000', he offered to demo the shuttle descent glide angle. He dirtied up the plane with gear and prop pitch, closed the cowl to avoid supercooling the engine, and over we went to 20° nose down. It was quite a view for a minute until he resumed a normal descent angle and I was able to clear my ears.

It was a fun hour, I learned a lot about exploring unusual attitudes safely, and best of all didn't vomit.

Waiting wastes money, as does a test that won't yield useful data by not stressing the system appropriately.

This is the path Elon has pushed SpaceX down and these are the consequences.

I would hope the families are savvy enough to know these two items are not related directly. They are completely different systems. The one launching tomorrow has already been into space successfully many times. the primary difference is the "cargo" and the configuration of the capsule.

Both DM2 crew are married to NASA astronauts, lol. They all understand too well that this test result does not impact their mission. I would bet they are smiling because SN5 is already stacked and waiting to go. RIP to SN4 and that expensive Raptor engine. This is how we go to the Moon and Mars. Lets go.

We know that, but It's an unneeded distraction so close to launch to explain to family. I explained to family at my friends launch the difference between solid (big firecracker) and liquid fueled systems and that was after we'd been through the tours and briefings.

That's OK, I still can't get my head around the idea that they arrive in orbit in 8:30 when the rookies deploy their barf bags.

The Weather Channel in the US has nonstop live launch coverage happening now, a welcome relief compared to other channels that kill the buzz with riots and C-19 programming.
