There are some threads on it someplace. Was a pile of work for almost zero overall effect. The resulting vents were just simply too small to make any real difference.

!

C-West, T-Craft and Sard replacement garnishes are vented and still sold. It is still cheaper to buy a 2nd-hand set of stock ones and just cut them though...

Not too small of a difference. It's been a nice addition for the turbo crowd. Useless for the stock group though. It is still a good mod for anyone wanting to keep the OEM hood. The mod along with removing the rear hood seal and replacing the lower aluminum underpanel are really your only options.

Looks nice. I would think the effect would be measurable. Looks like more than a simple swap of the trim piece with an open piece though, so I can see why its not common.

Toyota 86 in the building!

I know that Lunatic used to have an FRS he used to track with functional fender vents. He said that he could feel the air be evacuated from the engine bay once the fans turned on. Since it is a high-pressure area, I'm not sure how objectively well they work, but the pragmatist in me think it probably helps vent some heat and pressure from under the hood.

Go see Page 46 in this thread for some fender vents used by The Racers Line, Lunatic, and Jetbill: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/show...unatic&page=46

Adding my two cents here. Ambient temps are from 20C/70F in winter to 50C/120F in summer so this may be the best test environment for heat issues.

Temperatures are absolutely fine during DD, stop and go traffic, and spirited driving. During a series of hard street pulls can just about get the oil temp to 100C/210F. All of this is with the Air Conditioning on at all times.

On track however, oil touches 120C/250F after 5 laps (8 minutes ish) forcing me to do a cooldown lap or pull into the pits for 5 minutes.

Basic engine setup:
Avo Stage 2 turbo setup, built motor, 13-18psi depending on map, Redline 10W-40 oil.
FMIC in front of radiator
Turbo blanket
Heat wrapping from turbo to midpipe

Cooling setup:
Koyorad radiator & high pressure rad cap
Samco / Mishimoto hoses (rad and heater)
OEM fans (Middle East spec fans seem to be more capable than other markets)
Custom oil cooler with thermostatic plate mounted in cut open fog light area
Custom vented hood
Gold heat shielding on areas near headers

Further parts installed but not tested:
AEM Water/meth injection
Water misting kit for FMIC and oil cooler (operating but have not gathered data)

To me it seems the vented hood makes all the difference. During traffic I can literally see the heat haze rising out of the hood.

Honestly that air flow should be fine. Possibly too much. He should be running ducting, which I dunno if he is. But properly ducted, the opening should be about 30% of the heat exchangers size. Ideally the air would be ducted out on the back side to that same 30% dimension. Usually there isn't room for that. But that's "ideal". As far as airflow with no ducting, I'm not sure it's even possible to know what's best without trial and error, since so much air is going to travel around the heat exchanger instead of through it

Necromancer.
He said he had oil overheating issues with that setup.
But yes ducting (which doesn’t look like he has) and rear vents (which not sure if he has but is in the setup I recommended) would help. Still a small opening regardless.
