I'm not so sure it's there to decrease drag:
2. Rear Bodywork
Designers also like to pull in the bodywork aft of the rear wheel-well cutouts to show off a little tire tread葉he sports-car equivalent of a plunging neckline. But European regulations dictate that fenders must cover the entire tread width as measured from 30 degrees forward of the tire痴 top center to 50 degrees rearward. Black plastic fins like those you値l find on the Jaguar F-type allow stylists to create that provocative view while still adhering to the letter of the law.

I'm still waiting to see the whole package when it's revealed on 11/18 before offering any criticism. And even at that point, I need to see it in the flesh before making a buying decision as well as knowing what technical changes have been made. A wide array of color choices also enhance or minimize certain features which can either make or break the buying decision.

Yes, good point. I wasn't aware of that 50 degree rule in Europe.

I assumed they are trying to measure the change in drag resulting from bodywork modifications planned for the 2nd gen. The little flap on the wheel arch would break-up any remaining laminar boundary flow so the air can start wrapping around the back of the car.

That applies to the Subaru version, but I haven't seen anything indicating a Toyota version wouldn't be sold in Europe.

For some reason this:

Reminds me of this:

Not a deal breaker though, especially if functional.

Could have been worse, I suppose. But if the car was facing the other way and after a few stone chips to the front bumper, maybe. Slush and sand. lol

The current gen already has a similar flap.

I would be wanting a clocking plate on there for the winter since it would be brutal with slush freezing up.
What's (frozen) slush? What's a "Canadian Winter?" Does this play into what is the old saying "Canada begins in Quebec and ends in Ontario" ?

er, no...? current gen does not have spats/flaps around rear wheel arch, it is flat and smooth but there are aftermarket options out there and some kits like RB have that appearance..

Well I am in Canada and we do get winter so yes "Canadian" winter. Should have specified the exact geographic part of Canada I guess since I know how sensitive you northerners can be.

It isn't fair that even though you are around 750 kilometers (give or take for your actual location) north of me you have a nice warm ocean so don't have to live with the bullshit that everybody else does!

I like flares and contours but NOT right where I have to get in and out of the car.
Anybody that goes with a bigger tire and drives on any surface that is not perfectly clean and gravel/sand free is going to sandblast that piece bare of paint in no time at all.

Had the same issues with the skirts on my Lancer GT.
eh but your lancer's skirt is more akin to how the 2013-2020 twins were designed, a permanent side skirt molded into the rear quarter panel and so the skirt that you had was attached on the outside of the skirt as opposed to the new twin where it is a completely removable piece from the start. Maybe it'll catch some rocks, but should be more flush against the body than your Lancer and certainly more so than any current twin with a side skirt..

The part that sticks way out is the issue not how flush the fit (notice the proper word used) of the skirt. Doesn't matter if it was added or not the piece sticking out takes some serious abuse.
