Uneven Coloring on Brake Rotors

After my last track day, when I swapped out my track pads, I noticed that the front rotors had a distinct color band on them.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what this may indicate?

looks like you've got the wrong front rotors and calipers.

but mad props for getting those installed for a square braking setup.

HA. I forgot that I took pics of the rears. When i had the fronts off, I didn't think to take pics. When I found similar discoloring on the rear, I took some pics.

I guess at my age, I shouldn't wait a week to finally post a question.

Here is a pic of the front that I did take after the wheel was back on.

It's uneven transfer layer. Don't know why though.

So an uneven transfer layer was one of my suspicions. What I do not know is what would affect the transfer layer and thus cause it to be uneven. One obvious (but not necessarily correct) suspicion would be that I am getting uneven brake pressure across the rotor. Any thoughts on what would cause that? I am going to put a straight edge on the rotors to make sure that they are flat. However, this pattern shows up on all 4 rotors and 4 un-flat (new word by me) rotors seems unlikely.

Thanks for any input.

New pads on used rotors? Totally viable.

You ideally want new rotors with new pads, unless you know your rotors are flat.

Currently, I am leaving the rotors on the car and swapping the pads between my track pads and my street pads.

Did you ask anyone if the pad materials were compatible with each other?

That I did not. I had not even considered that as a possible issue.

Is that a thing???

I saw something similar when i bedded my track pads on the stock rear rotors (thanks tirerack - though they did do right just not in time). It was only on the one where i couldn't fit a shim between the pad and the caliper. Sanding the pad a little and installing a shim fixed it.

Is that a thing???

AP racing posted a video of how to clean old material off then bed new on.

basically a few stops from 50-5 mph should get them hot enough to burn off the old material, then repeat the normal bedding process

I don’t think I would worry about it. My car looks about the same and the rotors have only had the same pads on them their entire life.

I always went by more how they worked. If working great, I don't care how they look.
