LOL, yeah, a quick and dirty effort, but it does indeed give a general impression.

I think the 86 will be the better looking version at this stage. Poor old BRZ, got hit with the ugly stick right in the nose.

One of the things that attracted ME to the first gen was the simplicity of the body lines and the flowing classic sports car styling.
What they offer up now is a conglomeration of different styles all slapped together in a mishmash of conflicting lines and exaggerated features.
I fully appreciate that they may be "better" aerodynamically but that does not mean I have to like the appearance.
To gain a 14% increase in HP and 15% of torque to have a car I would not turn and look back at every time I walk away from it just is not a great deal for me.
But it's Toyota in the 21st century - when have they *not* gone overboard with the styling (not counting their most premium brand)?

I hear what you're saying about how incongruent the designs are. This is a big problem in the automotive industry generally and the Japanese industry, specifically (save for Mazda).

I mean, what you're describing is basically the Zupra - though I am holding out hope that the Toyota version will look better in person (as seems to be the case based on spy shots and subsequent renderings).

As far as I can tell, getting any car with sensible design these days costs either a lot of money or is exclusive to other markets (Honda E, S660, etc.) or both. Also worth keeping in mind, Subaru always had busy design language since at least the early 90s. Hopefully the Toyota version looks better.

That does indeed look much better.

Who cares what a Camry looks like(unless it's just absolutely hideous)? You buy a Camry because it will drive to the moon and back, four times over, and still last another 10+ years.

That said, the new ones look pretty darn good, especially in TRD trim.

Agreed.I'm not a big fan of sedans(or saloons for our friends across the pond),but there are a few that I would definitely consider buying if I were in the market for a new car,and the Camry is definitely on that very short list.

Made me curious as to how the 86 would compare through the JD Power reliability ratings. Ye, I know they are subjective but they at least use a controlled program to set the numbers.
Camry was an 84 and the 86 was an 80.

Some odd statements made in the surveys!

86 The Pros

Amount of trunk/hatch space Really?
Rear visibility Ya for a coupe
Quietness of the vehicle interior Who the hell did they survey?

Problem Areas

The vehicle's heating and air conditioning OK? Maybe?
Feel of the seat material Oh for crying out loud
Transmission smoothness Ummmm not a Camry

Camry Owners Like

  • Amount of trunk/hatch space Makes sense
  • Sound of the engine/exhaust Ummmmm Sure OK
  • Rear visibility OK on this one
Owners Don't Like

The problems experienced by owners of the 2017 Toyota Camry during the first 90 days of ownership.
  • The vehicle's voice recognition and bluetooth Common complaint
  • Smoothness of vehicle's ride Should try the 86?
  • Feel of the seat material For crying out Toyota people get some lotion or something

Those surveys are stupid.

Theres a bunch of criteria that messes up the ratings.

For example, reliability can take a hit because say the infotainment system sucks and not because the infotainment system is constantly broken.

It sucking and it being broken are 2 different things.

Tl;dr:

A: My car is an unreliable POS!
B: Why, what happened? Oil leaking, engine failure, electrical fault?
A: Nah, the trunk is too small and I don't like the seat fabric - crap reliability!
B: Right... [reliability] You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means!

Camry was an 84 and the 86 was an 80.
on my surveys, i did put that it was a quieter. but i came from driving a 10 year old convertible with leaky door seals that whistled on the highway.

i also put something to the effect of 'yes' to heat/air. as long as it works, it's better than i had!

Yep that is what "reliability" has turned into.
And how the hell does seat material "feel" wrong anyway? Do they mean the material? Position? Adjustment? Am I missing out on some really spectacular feeling seats someplace?
