Congrats hawk! Your review is appreciated. I really like the type of review you did as it contains the little things only an owner can oint out. Thanks.

HVAC Controls

An observation on the fourth day of owning the car in weather that has varied from 50's to 80's.

I know everyone has expressed various (mostly negative) opinions about the HVAC controls. Here's what I can tell you from using them so far (a little over 250 miles).

First, (and this seems to be a trend with me) I don't think they look as bad in the car as they do in pictures. Maybe it's because they blend in more when not being photographed with a flash, that would throw shadows, or maybe its just because I own them now, and have accepted them.

Second, I can already use them without looking at them for the most part. That is important to me. After 289K miles in my last car, I could pretty much drive it and do anything in the car without taking my eyes off the road. At night, I had to because most of the (unfortunately nonreplacable) dash lights had burned out.

Already with the FR-S, I can do most everything with not more than a quick glance. That includes adjusting the HVAC controls.

Third, the car is not big enough to need dual controls. The vents in it are HUGE for the size car, and infinitely adjustable all the way to being closed. Understand I'm talking the difference between "need" and "want". If you want them, its great, I just don't think the car needs them.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Bluetooth connection

OK, found something I'm not excited about.

My Droid X works great with the stock radio in terms of hands-free driving. Persons that call can hear me clearly, and I can hear them. Sometimes I do have to turn the volume up, but that only takes a (blind) reach to the radio.

Here's the "don't like" part. Yesterday, I was cruising down the road listening to some Springsteen on the iPod connection and using my Droid X for Nav.

Because I had it synched up with the radio, my phone thought I had a bluetooth headset so would only pump the turn-by-turn through that link. The radio, because I had it on iPod, would not interupt to give directions. The "problem" is it treats multimedia BT audio differently than "hands free" BT audio.

Haven't had a chance to play with it further. Easiest solution was to turn off BT on my phone (problem solved). Still, not exactly the way I "wanted" it to work.

Guess I need to read the @#$@ manual!

I also don't like that the radio isn't able to read the directory on my phone. Yes, I guess I expect a lot.

Capacity reduction

Just noticed this inside the driver's side door. I guess it's a good thing I just lost 5 lbs this week!

Stop taunting me car!

My office is freezing today so walked outside to warm up for a second. Something about seeing this makes me want to take the rest of the day off and go to the mountains! I hate when work gets in the way!

"But hey, I'm here, you're here, what's the problem hawk? let's go. I was made for this moment. I don't belong in this stable of sedans and minivans, I'm a real car, let's goooo"

Hopefully your office parking situation is better than mine in midtown, I'm kind of fearing putting mine in the parking garage....people suck at parking and full parking garages give me nowhere to run

at least at a grocery store or walmart...I can park out of range as I'm not all too afraid of walking.

I'm fortunate that the spaces here are wide enough, and the car is narrow enough, I don't think it will be an issue. I thought I had parked far enough away to not get surrounded by these big, ugly beasts, but it wasn't quite enough. Unfortunately just about anywhere else has trees that serve as targeting platforms for the local airborne life.

Hey you have to park your car in a corner, what happen if someone dings your car? I would be so sad.

If I parked like that here my car would look like someone swung a bag of hammers at the door. Amazing you can work in a an office with about 60 people and they'll still ding the shit out of your car.
