I'm bringing back an old thread from the dead here! I could probably have started my own but because this thread title matches perfectly, I'd thought I'd post my question here.
As some of you are already aware, I've been autocrossing my car in Stock class this season. Things are going great so far and thanks to Scion, I've been making quite a bit of money off the contingency program. So know I'm thinking I might buy a catback exhaust for the car. I've been looked Perrin's products and I really like them. But I'm a little confused with the rules and I'm hoping someone can clarify for me. From what I can tell from reading the rules, the only kit I could buy from Perrin is the catback exhaust kit. But what about the overpipe? Is replacing the overpipe allowed in Stock class if you leave the cats stock? The rules are clear that replacement and removal of the cats is not allowed if the car is still under warrenty, so that eliminates the front pipe from Perrin completely. But what about the overpipe? Could I just buy the catback kit and add on the overpipe? would replacing the overpipe be illegal for stock class because its infront of the midpipe cat? I think I'm confused because the FR-S seems to have 2 cats. Any help you guys can give would be appreciated. bneale

SCCA and Canadian rules aren't the same. In SCCA removing any cat (or any piping before it) would move you out of stock class, and you can only replace a defective one with a similar one. So, no, you cannot do a new front pipe.

E. Any part of the exhaust system beyond (downstream from) the head- er/manifold or catalytic converter, if so equipped, may be substituted or removed provided the system meets the requirements of 3.5 and 3.3.3.B.15. Stainless steel heat exchangers are permitted only if the physical dimensions and configuration remain unchanged.
Modifications of any type, including additions to or removal of, the catalytic converters, thermal reactors, or any other pollution control devices in the exhaust system are not allowed and the system must be operable. Replacement catalytic converters must be OE if the vehicle has not exceeded the warranty period as mandated by the EPA. Converters must be of the same type and size and used in the same location as the original equipment converter(s). This does not allow for a high performance unit. If the vehicle has exceeded the warranty period, replacement catalytic converters must be OE-type as per Section 13.0. Exhaust hangers which are bolted or welded on the car are consid- ered part of the body and may not be changed or removed. Any portion of the exhaust upstream from the cat is illegal to modify. And if you bothered looking up the diagram above to correct Tom, you probably also could have looked up the excerpt above just as easily. |

From what I've been able to find, the header itself also has a cat included with it. So if thats the case, how do I follow the above rule? Are we talking about the header/cat here? Or are we talking about the midpipe cat? For example, this appears to be the first cat (shown on the left) before the mid pipe cat. If were talking about the header/cat thing, then I can see the overpipe being allowed. If we're only talking about the midpipe backwards, then I can see not being allowed the overpipe. Hence why I'm so bloody confused. bneale

I read it as, start at the tailpipe and work your way up, you can replace anything up to a cat or if there is no cat, the header, but that's my interpretation and the way i see it interpreted through stock class currently.
After you clarified your question I can see where your question stems from, but I guess my next question would be, what do you gain from replacing the overpipe if you still need to have an OE cat in the stock location downstream from it? |

That's a messed up way to argue your point and its comical because you are wrong. You cannot touch anything from the rearward most cat forward. Overpipe is forward of that. So Front pipe, over pipe, etc you cannot touch. So you failed to understand simple rules.
EDIT: I would say I have an very intimate understanding of the SCCA rules, particularly stock class and kart classes. And I'm not confused on the exhuast parts since either own aftermarkets pieces or pre-ordered the exact ones in question.

The rule should probably state "downstream of last catalytic converter" but that's what it means, like others have said.
Maybe have a little more tact next time. |

No Strut tower bars at either end. You can do shocks, brake pads, drop-in intake filter, catback, front OR rear sway bar, wheels that only the offset is different than stock by 6mm, shift knob, catch can (read up on this to make sure your's would be legal), and tires.

Well, I guess I'm going to STX class this year unless I remove the bar. What about the Cusco Engine Power Brace? I think that bumps me up to the STX class also.
