that was just weird. but did like the car depiction. and not sure who was the 'good guy' in this vid. so instead of choosing which guy to cheer for, i just cheered for the 86.

If only it sounded like an LFA in real life! I get shivers every time I hear that engine. Best sounding production car ever... But I have to say, they did a really crappy job syncing the sounds. Edit: Apparently in episode 6, the guy in the 86 almost crashes and cries like a bitch while the other dude saves the day in a Prius which can go around the speed of sound and fly. Oh man... this anime nearly melted my brain.

I also heard Initial D follows a timeline and has a ways to go before it reaches 2012. And there are a few cars from the early 2000s that appeared in the manga (MR-S, 350Z) that need appear in the anime first.

Earlier this year Initial D's creator, Shigeno, contacted the founder and current president of the American-based forum Club4ag (also one of the First86) for inspiration. And there's some literature published on the 86 featuring the creator meeting with the 86 chief engineer. I read somewhere that Shigeno plans to have the 86 featured in a completely new series.
