No that wouldn’t fix the problem.

It’s fixed now with instructions suggested here. If anyone have the same problem and need a fix, I could refer you to someone in Raleigh, NC area.

A month ago I have crashed my GT 86 and had to replace the complete EPS steering column, because it was broken, please see here:

https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143043

I have found an used EPS for a fraction of the price of the new one, but now I have the same problem like most of you here...it is not as pronounced like on some of these videos, and is mostly noticeable when I go really slowly on cobblestone road...I can hear the electric motor/worm gear switching on and off....if I push the car faster I cannot recognize it...

the thing is that before installing it on the car(and after consulting this great forum) I did check the plastic/rubber coupler, and it was like new....

I also have to add that my steering position sensor was also damaged in the crash, I have ordered it and am waiting it to be delivered, but for now I am driving with ABS/ESP lights on....could it be that the absence of the sensor is making it become noisy at low speeds?

In the meantime I have dissasembled my old broken EPS unit and have removed the plastic gear and worm gear, and they look like new too....if my new steering position sensor doesn't fix the problem I guess I should make a combination of parts that I have...I am only not sure how to remove the plastic gear from the broken shaft (please see the pictures) it seems to be a really tight press fit and it doesn't move when i tried to remove it with the help of the vise....I would like to know if anybody has some experience with removing it, before I become more aggressive and put it under hydraulic press...

Toyota doesn’t sell the part individually for the 86 so I used the Hyundai part but later on someone discovered that the coupler from the Corolla is identical to the part in the 86 so you can order it that way. My DIY instructions list the Hyundai and Toyota part numbers:

Yeah sounds about right. Much worse than mine was but I’m not sure what time of road surface you are on. It is worst at low speeds on roads with small bumps like a dirt road or a road that has layers of asphalt crumbling.

Just wanted to give a shoutout to everyone on this thread who contributed to documenting, finding, and posting a fix to this EPS rattle issue. Had this same thing in my car (even worse than in the quoted videos) and was going crazy. Eventually had my mechanic replace this EPS coupler bushing with Toyota OEM part (after he had some trouble diagnosing) and it 100% fixed the rattle, car sounds and drives like new. You guys are the true MVPs and felt it my duty to give credit where it's due. Hopefully others with the same problem will find this thread and it will help them as well. Here's a picture of the garbage that was taken out of my EPS coupler, green rubber inside totally shredded.

Cheers!

Anyone besides @Opie see a busted coupler on a 2015 or later car?
