Yeah, I would imagine that it would need to be certified for sale in those countries, so a similar problem to a new platform meeting crash regs.

Seeing those sales numbers made me realize how hard it is to sell 25000 units of a niche vehicle. I say this because they need to sell that many GR Yarises. And I hope they bring it stateside, but considering that it's a unique platform (crash regs) and engine (getting it 50 state certified) it's a big ask to bring it here.

But still, need to sell 25k of them, bring it here, stick the motor in the Corolla and camry while they're at it, they could definitely make sense of it.

They’ll easily sell the 25k between Japan and Australia.

When Toyota put out a launch price offer here for the first 1,000 GR-4s, they put it at AU $39k. They expected it to take several months to a year to sell that initial first year allocation of 1,000 cars. It sold out in one day. They released more cars in the next allocation but cheekily bumped up the price by $5k, so sales have slowed. But still, it showed the demand for it.

In Japan it will be hugely popular. Toyota and GR are kinda a big deal there, and the Yaris is a perfect sized sportscar for their narrow streets and tiny parking spaces. Also, to help with volume, in Japan they are also selling a base model with a different, low powered regular Yaris engine with a CVT, in the exact same body shell, to help homologate it. That should sell well too. Technically they just need to homologate the 3 door body for motorsport - they can put any engine they want in it.

Tl;dr I would not hold your breath waiting for the GR-4 in North America. You may get a GR Corolla though, with that engine. Won’t be quite as good though.

The CB18 in the Japanese Forester makes 175 horsepower and 221 lb-ft. The torque figure is impressive enough to make the car feel less like a slug off the line. But people would still bemoan its lack of top-end.

Although the Alpine A110S tops out at 288 hp from its 1.8. That would be so very silly.

Way to kill a dream, lol. Yeah I figured its not coming here, the hot hatch is more or less dead here according to OEM execs.

So...does that mean it won't be sold in Japan as well since it's being called a "US Only" model?

If the car won't be sold in Europe, then it's even more amazing Subaru and Toyota spent the money to develop the car just for the U.S. (and presumably Japanese) market. They really aren't going to be raking in much profit on it. It's hard to see the 'business case' for the car.

As I've said before, this car is a gift to enthusiasts. Other car companies are killing off their lower volume cars to focus on the big selling models. Ford canned ALL of their 'cars' in the U.S. and now sells only trucks (and equivalent SUV/Crossover things). For Toyota and Subaru to bother with spending the money to develop a next-generation car at all deserves applause and thanks.

With all the depressing things going on in the US lately, between bitter politics and a raging pandemic, it's a nice little distraction to look forward to the unveiling of the next generation car later this month.

When I told my girlfriend ford doesn't make cars anymore she didn't believe me .

Even worse when I gave her options for 4 door sedans offered in manual.

Freak her right out and tell her GM is down to the Spark, the Malibu and the Camaro as far as cars go.

Two of the companies that used to offer a full range of cars with sometimes up to 6 trim levels for each are down to 3 cars with very limited options (other than the Camaro which has a confusing number of trims and packages).

Of those two posters I've owned, driven or ridden in everyone of those except one. I didn't even know they made a 4 door Maverick.

At least there will be two more next year, the Caddy CT5-V Blackwing and CT4-V Blackwing.

You have to wonder if those will also be the last two ever produced in that class.
