Maybe we should give kids H1s instead and at least they will kill someone else instead... ok maybe we should focus on the driving instead. I notice this a lot though with smart/entrepreneurial people they are willing to take more risk than the average joe. Sometimes its for the better or the worse but they just aren't conservative play it safe types. The people I fly are often rather well off. The old money (had it for generations) ones tend to be very conservative but the self mades will push you to find ways to get there even in the face of the worst conditions. My parents wouldn't buy me a car or even put me on their insurance. They didn't want the liability and they figured I would probably just wreck the first car I had anyway. It didn't end up being the case but I certainly have them reasons to feel that way since I grew up racing Quarter Midgets (go-karts) and when I stepped up to a full-size car the experience didn't just go away. I was fearless. I guess my point in all this is that you can't really buy the perfect car for a teenager unless it comes with a chauffeur but even so teenagers have to test the limits. Eventually children have to be given adult responsibilites and they have to find the limits of what they can do (hopefully not tradegically). Adults die in car accidents everyday too though. They say speeding is a factor in every accident. But then again everyone speeds so that's kind of a bad statistic. In this case maybe it really was the cause if he shot off the turn too quick, but I guess my point is blaming the parents or the car they bought him is kind of silly IMHO. Some kids you could give them a Mustang and they wouldn't go over the speed limit once with it. Some kids will wrap a Prius around a telephone poll. I wonder if mandatory track days as part of driving lessons would help. Not for the sake of making people push the limits on the streets but for the sake of people knowing what a car can or cannot do. But who knows maybe he got distracted or a deer ran out I haven't really heard the other kids stories I don't want to just run with the assumption he slid off the end even if it is the case. It's Monday morning quarterbacking at this point though. It's terrible loss for the family and the FT86 community and my condolences go out to those that knew him because it seems like he was a bright kid from the articles I read.

Well, not H1s but my kids learned to drive in a Chevy Astro and a Chevy Suburban. They did not drive anything smaller until right before they took their practical driver's test.

I think learning in a larger vehicle (while supervised of course) made them better drivers in the end. They had to be much more conscious of their portion of the space, and pay much closer attention to speed and distance in a larger vehicle.

Condolences to the family of the young man, I remember when I lost control of my MK3 Supra that had no nannies and traction control it was a hard lesson for me. One of the few things I've learned from driving a car like the 86 is you need to be a lot more defensive driver than most ordinary cars.

2. I feel a kid is less likely to drive too fast and show off in a regular car then a flashy sports car. I've never heard of someone egging on a yugo owner saying, "show us what it can do". But yes, driving unsafe can lead to disaster in any vehicle.
If 4 out of 4 kids wrecked cars, I think it's the parents fault who taught them how to drive .
