Tight tolerances means that the viscosity of the lubricant determines how well it flows through things like bearing clearances. So, in the old days, the tolerances were not tight and thicker oil was required. I believe this was attributed to the design limitations that existed prior to things like computerized design. Also keep in mind that a lot of those engine designs lasted for 40+ years.

In modern times, there has been a very high emphasis on increased efficiency and reliability. Tighter tolerances have been one of the many results of that focus.

So, that means that if you had bearing clearances of .030" before and now your bearing clearances are .009" then a lubricant that is too thick over spec is going to create problems getting through those spaces and therefore could cause premature failure due to a lack of sufficient lubrication.

Things like heat do increase viscosity so using a higher viscosity lubricant is one way to address a reduction in lubrication due to heat stress.

It is also debatable that going that route is a better approach than adding greater lubricant cooling capacity. Basically, the entire point of this thread.

Sorry to be so verbose. Maybe this should be the first response to the OP.

No it doesn’t. A tolerance is the allowable deviation of a part from its engineered nominal size.

Nothing pedantic about it. Words have meanings and those meanings matter.
Tolerance=/=clearance. You can even have a VERY tight tolerance on your clearance, and still have a very large clearance.

You knew damn well it was a misuse of the term before asking the question. It costs nothing to be nice. Your troll is weak and annoying.

...and old. Very old.

Listen here Ultramoron, none of it involved you. You interjected yourself and want to play victim. Find the block button if you're really that sensitive. This is the internet.

OK, to expand on "Context is everything".

I responded to the original sentiment about tolerances. In the automotive world people frequently talk about clearances and tolerances synonymously. While you may well be technically correct that those two things are independent and shouldn't be confused, the context of the point was that modern engines run tighter tolerances which I took as tighter clearances. Right or wrong, that kind of language is frequently used in the automotive world. Very much like interchanging engines with motors for cars/trucks. You know full well what any of this meant. Because of that you got labeled a pedantic troll. I didn't do that. I just made a simple reply.

By the logic you applied, you are certainly being pedantic. By the attitude and persistence you are displaying, you are certainly being a troll.

There really isn't any need for either thing. I'm sure we can all get along.

It's his standard schtick. I just got tired of it this time.

I think it's pretty obvious he means "clearances" and not "tolerances"

I'm not sure how any of this added value to the discussion.

People should say what they mean, otherwise it looks like they have no idea what they're talking about.
